WWE Divas Championship History

The WWE Divas Championship was created in 2008, years after an established World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) brand split. On WWE Raw, female talent competed for the WWE Women’s Championship, and on WWE Smackdown!, female wrestlers competed for the WWE Divas Championship. The first Divas Champion was crowned on July 20, 2008, when Michelle McCool defeated Natalie Neidhart at The Great American Bash 2008.
Prior to the Divas Championship, over the years—at different time periods, the WWE Women’s Champion was able to defend the Championship on both brands, and at other times, the belt was exclusive to WWE Raw. On September 19, 2010, at Night of Champions 2010, the WWE Women’s Championship and Divas Championship was unified when Michelle McCool defeated Melina Perez.
