In August 1999, Orlando Magic dancer Trinity McCray was signed to a WWE development contract, and sent to train at WWE developmental territory Florida Championship Wrestling. There she went by the name "Naomi Knight." In the months that followed she wrestled the likes of Aksana, AJ Lee, Savannah, Serena Deeb and more.

On June 10, 2010, in the finals of the FCW Divas Championship Tournament, Naomi Knight defeated Serena Deeb to become the first-ever Florida Championship Wrestling Divas Champion. In round one, she defeated Liviana (WWE Diva Maxine), and in round two she defeated Savannah (Angela Fong).

On August 31, 2010, on the finale of WWE NXT Season 2, Naomi was announced as one of six rookies on WWE NXT Season 3—an all Divas version of the show. WWE Diva Kelly Kelly was announced as her Pro—her mentor throughout the season. On September 7, 2010, on the Season 3 premiere, she won both NXT Rookie Diva Challenges—a "Dance Contest," and "Capture the Flags Race," and teamed up with Kelly Kelly to defeat Alicia Fox and Maxine.

During one of the speaking challenges on NXT, she cut a promo saying how she wanted things to be more about wrestling: “ Aren't we here to wrestle? I don’t see how any of this (the challenges) have anything to do with wrestling. I want to have a match.” She picked up her second win on NXT teaming with pro Kelly Kelly and fellow rookie Jamie Keyes to defeat Kaitlyn and LayCool. Naomi suffered her first loss in October as she was defeated by Alicia Fox, though she defeated Maxine on the Halloween episode. After Aksana left Goldust at the altar, she accused Aksana of making up her immigration problems as a way of getting attention. She then defeated Aksana later that night with both Kelly Kelly and Goldust in her corner. She defeated Kaitlyn the next week, but lost to AJ the week after. On the penultimate episode of season 3, it was announced that Naomi and Kaitlyn were the two finalists. Naomi’s pro Kelly Kelly was absent from the finale but wished her luck via satellite. After a promo challenge between the two finalists, they had one last match which Kaitlyn won. Afterwards, Kaitlyn was declared the winner of NXT Season 3.

The FunkadactylsAfter NXT Season 3 ended, Naomi made a onc-off appearance along with AJ on Season 4. She appeared during a rookie challenge based off of “The Price Is Right,” holding up one of the items. She spent the next year competing in FCW alongside AJ, Aksana, Kaitlyn, Caylee Turner and Audrey Marie. At the end of 2011, Naomi re-debuted on Raw, along with Cameron (Ariane Andrew) as one of the dancers to Brodus Clay’s new ‘Funkasaurus’ gimmick. The two appeared only in a valet capacity for most of the year apart from one episode of Raw where they begged Vince McMahon to allow Brodus back. Mid-way through the year, the duo were officially named ‘The Funkadactyls’ on television. On the WWE TLC Pay-Per-View pre-show that year, the duo competed in their first official match – a #1 contender’s battle royal. She ended up winning after Divas champion Eve Torres interfered, allowing her to eliminate Kaitlyn. She received her title match against Eve later that night but was unsuccessful.

In 2013 the Funkadactyls began to take on more of a wrestling role. They wrestled their first match as a tag team on an episode of Main Event (in what was the first ever Divas’ match on the programme). They defeated the team of Aksana and Tamina Snuka in an impromptu match. She wrestled her first match on Raw in February, a 6-person tag match with Brodus and Tensai against Primo, Epico and Rosa Mendes-- in which she was victorious. When the Bella Twins made their return to WWE in March, they immediately sparked a rivalry with Cameron and Naomi. A fight broke out between them backstage on an episode of Smackdown and another again the next week on Raw. After the Bellas defeated them on an episode of Main Event, an 8-person mixed tag match was announced for WrestleMania 29, where The Funkadactyls would team with Brodus and Tensai to face the Bellas and Team Rhodes Scholars.
