Elizabeth Carolan began wrestling
in Notre Dame High School in Elmira, New York as part of
her school's scholastic wrestling team. She garnered notable
accolades in amateur wrestling including being the first
female varsity wrestler in her high school's history, freestyle
Champions, and was a member of USA Wrestling. After high
school, she began to train professionally under the "All
Knighters"...Joey Knight and Robin Knightwing, and made
pro debut wrestling against Alexis Laree, (Mickie James).
She went on the make a name for herself wrestling male and
female wrestlers in the independent circuit, which included
the likes of Sumie Sakai., Angel Williams, Joey Knight and
Kevin Grace.
She later made her debut in OVW (Ohio Valley Wrestling)
as the valet of Chris Masters and later manager of Aaron
"The Idol" Stevens. Shelly Martinez later joined the duo
and she feuded against Alexis Laree. Elizabeth Carolan soon
signed a developmental contract for World Wrestling Entertainment
and continued working on OVW Television.
She made her WWE debut on the May 8th 2006 airing of Raw,
with an attack on Mickie James. She continued her attacks
and verbal confrontation with Mickie James as part of storyline
development in which she seemingly had past conflicts with
Mickie James before the WWE. This led up to May 29th 2006
where she and Torrie Wilson defeated Candice Michelle and
Victoria, who had Mickie James in their corner. The following
week on Monday Night Raw, she defeated Victoria, she however
was injured in the match-up and quickly taken off television
shortly after her debut.
After being out of action for some time after surgery, she
made her return on the July 9th 2007 airing of WW Raw, in
which she and Jillian Hall were defeated by Candice Michelle
and Mickie James. Unlike 2006, she was a heel and teamed
up with Melina Perez and Jillian for match-ups in the weeks
that followed.
At SummerSlam 2007, she won a 12-woman Battle Royal to become
the #1 contender for the WWE Women's Championship and during
the match; she eliminated Brooke Adams, Kelly Kelly, Torrie
Wilson and Michelle McCool. The weeks that followed she
feuded with the champion; Candice Michelle. At Unforgiven
on September 16th, she came up short, however on October
7th at No Mercy she defeated Candice Michelle to become
the WWE Women's champion.
On April 14, 2008 on RAW, Mickie James defeated Beth Phoenix
to win the WWE Women's title, ending her reign. Beth set
her sight on recapturing the Women's championship from Mickie
James however a feud with Melina Perez developed, providing
a huge distraction. On May 18, 2008 at Judgment Day, Mickie
James defeated both her and Melina in a
Triple Threat match to retain the WWE Women's Championship
and on June 1, 2008 at One Night Stand, Beth Phoenix defeated
Melina Perez in the 1st ever WWE Women's I Quit match. On
the July 14, 2008 airing of Raw, Santino Marella issued
an open challenge which Beth answered. She defeated him
via a roll-up. The next week, the two kissed in the ring
– to Beth’s astonishment. They eventually began a relationship
and dubbed themselves “Glamarella” – the new power couple.
They challenged Mickie James and Kofi Kingston for their
Women’s and Intercontinental titles respectively. At SummerSlam
(August 17, 2008) the couple defeated both of them in a
Winner Takes All intergender tag match to win the titles.
Beth found a thorn in her side in the form of the returning
Candice Michelle. Candice scored an upset win over Beth
Phoenix in a 6-Diva tag match and was rewarded with a title
shot at No Mercy. She retained her title after exploiting
Candice’s surgically repaired shoulder. She then found herself
representing a team of Raw Divas going up against the Smackdown
Divas – led by Divas’ Champion Michelle McCool. The teams
faced off at the Survivor Series with Beth ending up as
the sole survivor, getting the win for the Raw brand. She
also won a Slammy Award for Diva of the Year. Over the next
few weeks, she would spot an obsessive fan of hers in the
crowd. Eventually the fan began to get involved in her matches,
attacking her opponents. Beth eventually took the woman
(Rosa Mendes) on as her intern. Things heated up when Melina
returned from injury. Melina won a #1 contender’s battle
royal to face her for the title at the Royal Rumble 2009.
She ended up getting the upset victory to relieve her of
the Women’s Championship. She and Santino eventually split
after he began to appear in drag as his “identical twin
sister Santina” and she appeared sporadically on Raw and
Superstars. She received her first shot at the Divas’ Championship
in August but was defeated by Mickie James. When former
Diva Trish Stratus guest-hosted Raw, Beth challenged her
to a mixed tag team match. She teamed with Big Show and
Chris Jericho while Trish teamed with MVP and Mark Henry.
Trish pinned her with the Stratusfaction (September 14,
2009).
On the October 12, 2009 airing of Raw, she was revealed
to have been moved to Smackdown in a trade organised by
guest-host Nancy O’Dell. Once on Smackdown, Beth began a
series of mind games with Women’s Champion Michelle McCool.
Although both women were on the winning team at Bragging
Rights (October 25, 2009), the tension continued to develop.
At the 2010 Royal Rumble, she was a surprise entrant in
the Rumble match itself. She became only the second woman
in history to compete in the match and managed to eliminate
the Great Khali – before she herself was eliminated by CM
Punk. After
the Royal Rumble, she approached Vickie Guerrero about a
shot at the Women’s title. Vickie – who was aligned with
LayCool at the time – refused. The next week, Beth saved
Tiffany from a beating at the hands of LayCool and Vickie.
A 5-on-1 handicap match pitting her against a team of Divas
including Vickie went to a no-contest when she accidentally
ripped Vickie’s pants off. She was on the losing side of
a 10-Diva tag match at WrestleMania 26, but won a rematch
on Raw the next night. She pinned Michelle McCool in a tag
match on Smackdown to earn a shot at the Women’s title at
Extreme Rules 2010. The match was an “Extreme Makeover”
hardcore match and Beth defeated Michelle to win her third
Women’s title. She tore her ACL four weeks later – and lost
the title to Layla after she was pinned in a handicap match
also involving Michelle.
She made her return at the 2010 Survivor Series, saving
the new WWE Divas Champion Natalya from an attack by LayCool.
This led to Natalya and Beth Phoenix facing LayCool in the
first ever Divas’ tables match at the TLC PPV. She and Natalya
were victorious when Natalya splashed both of their opponents
through a table. In the next few weeks she scored multiple
victories over LayCool in singles and tag team matches.
She was then moved to Raw in the 2011 Supplemental Draft.
She did nothing of note until August when she won a battle
royal to face Kelly Kelly for the Divas’ Championship at
SummerSlam 2011. After the match she brutally attacked Kelly
Kelly and claimed that she was going to put an end to all
the “Barbie Doll Divas” in WWE. She and Natalya formed a
stable called The Divas of Doom and pushed a movement called
“Pin-Up Strong” – based around being powerful as well as
beautiful. She was unsuccessful at winning the Divas’ title
at SummerSlam and Night of Champions (in her hometown of
Buffalo). However she won the title at Hell In A Cell thanks
to help from Natalya, marking her first reign as Divas’
Champion. In
the weeks following her title win, the Divas of Doom would
attack the other Divas. They liked to lock them in a painful
submission hold and hold up a house microphone so the arena
could hear them scream. Beth also successfully defended
her title against Kelly Kelly and Eve Torres. She was taken
off television at the start of 2012 after suffering a swollen
cheekbone in a match with Alicia Fox. When she returned,
she claimed she was bored of being so dominant. She claimed
she wanted competition. Her challenge was answered by Tamina
Snuka, against whom she defended the title at Elimination
Chamber 2012. Two
weeks later, she and Eve Torres interrupted an episode of
Extra hosted by Maria Menounos. Maria had pinned her previously
in a match at Tribute To The Troops. She and Eve Torres
challenged Maria and Kelly Kelly to a tag team match at
WrestleMania. Maria and Kelly Kelly won the match after
Maria rolled up Beth.
After WrestleMania, she lost a non-title match to Nikki
Bella after Kelly Kelly came out and distracted her. She
offered Nikki a title match to save her reputation – which
they had on April 23 airing of Raw. During the match – which
was a Lumberjill match – she twisted her ankle. Nikki capitalized
and she lost the title, just days away from achieving the
longest ever Divas’ title reign. She was declared unfit
to compete in her rematch at Extreme Rules. Layla replaced
her and won the title off Nikki. She was instead given a
match against Layla at Over The Limit on on May 20, 2012,
which she lost. She also lost a rematch at No Way Out and
was pinned by Layla in a 6-Diva tag at Money In The Bank.
In the weeks that followed, she appeared sporadically on
television for the next three months. However the #1 contender
to the Divas’ title – Kaitlyn – was attacked backstage at
Night of Champions. When her attacker was discovered to
be a blonde, she was immediately accused. She denied any
involvement and also accused Natalya (who was also blonde),
leading to a match between them on an episode of Smackdown
in Buffalo. She was initially suspended by Eve Torres but
Booker T quickly reversed it. She was then eliminated from
the investigation once it was revealed the attacker had
been Aksana in a blonde wig. On an episode of Raw, she was
put into a match against AJ Lee. AJ was the initial winner
but Raw GM Vickie Guerrero had the match restarted – allowing
her to hit the Glam Slam on AJ to win. However afterwards
Vickie criticized her for “not getting the job done” and
abruptly fired her from WWE. An actuality, Beth Phoenix's
contract with World Wrestling Entertainment came to an end,
and she made the decision to take a break from the industry.
