While Awesome Kong did not have the picture perfect year in TNA that she did in 2008, her name remained synonymous with Women’s Wrestling in 2009. She remained a focal point in TNA’s women’s division, and continuing to be a mainstay in Shimmer and other independent organizations.

Kong began the year as the TNA Women’s Knockout Champion. She was often accompanied by her manager and tag team partner Raisha Saeed, and followers Rhaka Khan and Sojourner Bolt (known as The Kongtourage). On February 8, 2009 at TNA Against All Odds, Awesome Kong defeated ODB to retain the TNA Knockout’s title, and the weeks that followed saw the end of “The Kongtourage.” The end to Kong’s stable led to March 15, 2009 at TNA Destination X, where she (accompanied by Raisha Saed) defeated Sojourner Bolt to retain the TNA Knockout’s Championship. That month, Kong also defeated PrymeTyme Amy Lee in a Last Woman Standing Match at Women Superstars Uncensored’s 2nd Anniversary Show (March 7, 2009).

A feud with The Beautiful People began, which stemmed from them attempting to cut Kong’s hair. Angelina Love of The Beautiful People was successful in cutting some of Kong’s hair on April 16, 2009, which led to April 19, 2009 at TNA Lockdown, where Angelina Love won the TNA Knockout’s title after pinning Taylor Wilde during a triple threat match. The feud continued throughout May, with Kong being unsuccessful in regaining the title on May 24, 2009 at TNA Sacrifice. During this month, Kong taped four volumes of Shimmer. This included three big wins. In Shimmer Volume 23 she defeated “The Latina Sensation” Mercedes Martinez, and in volumes 24 and 26, she and Sara Del Rey picked up tag team victories.

Kong continued to be a top contender in TNA’s Women’s Division, and began a rivalry against Tara. The feud led to two pay per view bouts, where she wrestled at TNA Bound For Glory (October 18 , 2009), and lost to Tara in a Six Sides of Steel match at Turning Point (November 15 , 2009). Kong ending the year challenging Mercedes Martinez for the WSU Championship (December 12, 2009), and participating in the TNA New Year’s Knockout tournament (December 31, 2009).

Tag Team Top 10 of 2009 – #3:
Awesome Kong & Raisha Saeed

Throughout 2009, Raisha Saeed (Melissa Anderson) continued as Awesome Kong’s manager and tag team partner. The two were one of the established teams to participate in TNA’s Knockout Tag Team Championship (to crowd the first ever champions). On August 27, 2009 the ladies advanced in the tournament, however, they lost in the second round to Sarita & Taylor Wilde on September 17, 2009. Both matches exposed friction between Kong and Raisha. Their tension came to ahead on October 18 , 2009 at TNA Bound For Glory, where Kong was about to defeat ODB to win the knockouts title. Miscommunication between the two cost Kong the match. There almost 2-year relationship on TNA television came to an end on October 22, 2009 on TNA Impact, where Awesome Kong defeated Raisha Saed. Following the match, Awesome Kong power bombed Raisha off the Impact Zone entrance ramp. This was the last time “Raisha Saeed” was seen on television.

Angelina Love vs. Madison Rayne

—This match was hyped throughout the show, with Angelina Love stretching as well as Madison and Love making their way to the ring. A video package was also shown of the events that led up to the current incarnation of The Beautiful People.

This was not much of a match, with Madison getting early offense, and Angelina inevitably turning it in her favor. A nice bicycle kick got the win for Angelina. After the match, Angelina tore off Madison’s top and began choking her. Madison’s fellow Beautiful People members Lacey Von Erich and Velvet Sky then came to the ring, and executed a surprisingly enjoyable beat down on Love.

Winner: Angelina Love

—In Knockouts news, it is likely that Alissa Flash is no longer with TNA Wrestling, as her profiles have been removed from the official website. Alissa is better known for working as Awesome Kong’s manager Raisha Saeed, and as Cheerleader Melissa on the independent scene.

7pm Thursday, December 31 on SpikeTV

—Happy Holidays Women’s Wrestling fans. As the year draws to an end, one of the most significant nights in the future of Women’s Wrestling history is upon us…TNA’s New Year’s Knockout Eve Special (Thursday, December 31 Spoilers). The show will consist of a tournament to determined the #1 Contender for the Knockouts Championship. Also on show will be the top TNA Pay-Per-View matches of 2009 and TNA Knockouts Tag Team Champions Sarita and Taylor Wilde in action. While many who have read the spoilers disagree on the tournament winner, the show’s importance surpasses it’s booking. While the knockouts may have gotten the worse night for viewership (New Year’s Eve), it is the first time in a long time that a Women’s Wrestling show will be televised. This is a big deal, as TNA is the second leader in the wrestling industry. Should we expect great ratings?…No, TNA shouldn’t either. On a regular Thursday night, that would definitely be a factor.

The success of the show should be based on whether the current group of Knockouts were able to deliver in the action that we see…There is no excuses here…We can’t say that the women were short changed for television time by the guys. This will translate into “Can the Knockouts deliver if given a 1-hour weekly show?”

Hopefully TNA will capitalize on the special by releasing a DVD shortly after.

—Also scheduled for Thursday night is WWE Divas Champion Melina taking on Alicia Fox on WWE Superstars, which will air on WGN America. This match should be much better than Raw’s showing…

—On this week’s episode of Raw (December 28, 2009), Kelly Kelly faced Maryse. Kelly Kelly made her way to the ring first, followed by highlights from last week’s match (Six-Diva Santa’s Little Helper Match), which saw Kelly Kelly pin Maryse. Out next was the always confident Maryse, who found herself on the defense. Like most of Maryse’s matches, she got damn near no offense, and pulled off a quick win after hitting her snap DDT. After the match, Maryse got on the microphone with a few disparaging words to WWE Divas Champion Melina, followed by a kick to Kelly Kelly.

Other notable Raw appearances were from The Bella Twins, Gail Kim and Jillian. Jillian was the victim of a prank by DX, and Gail Kim joined the Bella Twins as companionship for the show’s guest host ( Rapper Timbaland). This time around it was especially disturbing see how the WWE has been using Gail Kim.

—The cover art for Shimmer Women Athletes Volume 26 has been revealed. The cover features TNA’s Alissa Flash, better known as Cheerleader Melissa.

—In other Women’s Wrestling DVD news, the other leader in it’s genre—WSU—will be taking a winter break, and returning with a full show on Saturday, March 6th. This will be a big day, as WSU’s Class of 2010 Hall of Fame Ceremony & the Third Anniversary Show will be taped. The shows will be taped at the ACE Arena in Union City, NJ.

Here are the current matches scheduled for the card:

WSU World Title Match
(c) Mercedes Martinez vs. Rain

WSU Spirit Championship Match
(c) Alicia vs. Brittney Savage

Jazz vs. Amber O’Neal

Submission Match
Jana vs. Latasha

Also scheduled to appear on the show is former WWE Women’s Champion Molly Holly (Nora Greenwald).

—While WSU is taking a break, another east coast women’s wrestling show will be in full effect. JAPW Womens Division presents “Back Where it all Began” on January 9th 2009 in Bayonne, NJ. Scheduled to appear is Sassy Stephie, Brittany Force, TNA Knockout Hamada, Sara Del Rey, Haily Hatred, Cheerleader Melissa, Annie Social, Sumie Sakai, Ariel, Portia Perez and More. (JAPW.net)

—WSU Champion Mercedes Martinez ranked #1 on last week’s PWI Women’s Ranking. This week (For Period Ended December 25, 2009), she was bumped down by Tara, who surely took the #1 spot due to winning the TNA Women’s Title at Final Resolution.

Here is the full Rank:
Pro Wrestling Illustrated Women’s Top 10:

—Trish Stratus was named Woman of the Decade by Pro Wrestling Illustrated. She had the following to say on her official website…

“I couldn’t ask for a better Christmas gift! I’m honored to be regarded as the woman of the decade, especially when I look back at my WWE signing, which took place 10 years ago…I feel honored…and kinda old,” she joked, “And blessed to have the support I’ve had for the last 10 years…a decade of Stratusfaction – wow!”

—Speaking of Rankings, don’t forget to cast your votes on Lethalwow.com 2009 Year-End Awards…http://pub33.bravenet.com/vote/…

—The daughter of Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka has apparently been signed by the WWE. World Xtreme Wrestling posted the following on their Twitter account (http://twitter.com/WXWOffice):

“CONGRATS to WXW’s own Sarona Snuka who has just signed a WWE Contract!”

Northjersey.com released a new interview feature on Mickie James on December 24. Click Here To Read The Interview.

In this edition of The Rundown: Awesome Kong launches a nonprofit organization, Kong’s WSU Wrestling return, Maria Kanellis Celebrity Apprentice update, World Wrestling Entertainment and Lauren Mayhew part ways, “Sweet” Saraya Knight TNA rumor killer, Angelina Love hints to a return, and much more.

—This week, I opted to not have results for the November 27 episode of WWE Smackdown, as there was no Divas match on the show. Mickie James however did have an appearance on the show. The WWE did a recap of last week’s “Piggy James” segment, followed by a backstage interview with Mickie. Mickie said that in spite of being “picked on” by Michelle Michelle and Layla, she would not be leaving Smackdown.

—Mickie James had a great week with “Team Mickie” being victorious in the 10-woman tag team elimination match at Survivor Series. (See: Survivor Series Results) She also added another win to her belt, in Raw’s “Thanksgiving Mayflower Melee Match.”

—After Raw’s “Thanksgiving Mayflower Melee Match,” former Divas champion Maryse made her return attacking current WWE Divas champ Melina. Her return was met with mixed reactions from fans. (See: Raw Results)

—On the TNA side of things, while there wasn’t two knockouts matches on the show as we are use to, most of the division was on television. Tara, The Beautiful People, Daffney, Hamada, Alissa Flash, Traci Brooks, Sarita and Taylor Wilde competed in a battle royal, to determine the #1 contender spot to face singles champion ODB at Final Resolution. Tara was victorious, and will be facing ODB at Final Resolution. (TNA Impact Report)

Awesome Kong and Christy Hemme were oddly not in the Knockouts battle royal.

—TNA treated fans to another knockouts match, in an online exclusive. Hamada defeated Alissa Flash in a fantastic match. This is how to work a match when given little time…

—While Awesome Kong may have been absent from Impact in the last 2 weeks, she has been getting buzz on the internet. It was announced that she would be making her return to WSU Wrestling. On Saturday, December 12th, 2009 at Flemington’s American Legion Hall in Flemington, Nj, Kong will challenge Mercedes Martinez for the WSU World title. This will be an uncensored rules match—a must see.

Awesome Kong has launched a charitable organization called “Fountains for Youth,” which is a nonprofit organization to help inner-city youth. To generate buzz and to raise funds, she is selling perhaps her most recognizable ring gear on Ebay…

In other Awesome Kong news, she recently joined a new PR company…Eclectic Media Productions already has photos of Awesome Kong on there official site.

In ever more Kong news, she had a major fire scare this week as apartments within her building caught on fire, she tweeted to fans during the events that took place…

The fire was on my floor… Of course! Started N the apt 3 doors dn… Of Course! I let my renter’s insurance lapse last month… Of COURSE!

Back in my apt & doing well. Remnants of smoke make for watery eyes. Funny how the first thing I grabbed was my costume.

Back in my apt & doing well. Remnants of smoke make for watery eyes. Funny how the first thing I grabbed was my costume.

—Former TNA Knockout Angelina Love made another appearance this weekend. She once again reunited with Velvet Sky. During the Pro Championship Wrestling appearance, the Chicago Sun Times caught up with the ladies (Click Here For The Feature). When asked if the original beautiful People would be reunited, Angelina had the following response…

”Oh, absolutely…Don’t believe everything you hear, and don’t believe everything you read…

We’ll definitely get on that train again…

‘It’ll be soon…That’s all I can say — soon”

—Lauren C. Mayhew who has worked as ECW ring announcer in the last couple of weeks, has parted ways with the WWE. The parties could not come to an agreement for a longer-term contract. Lauren posted the following on Twitter…

“No longer ring announcing on WWE for the time being because I will be focussing on my acting and music in the new year. I will miss my new friends.”

—Rumors of Saraya Knight joining TNA has been debunked.

—Filming for the third installment of Celebrity Apprentice has been said to have ended. Maria is now expected to return to WWE Smackdown!.

—Independent wrestler Alere Little Feather is gearing up for a return to wrestling in March. Alere has been rehabbing her neck after an injury.

—The segment began with Traci Brooks entering the ring, already in the ring was Hamada, Alissa Flash, and Daffney. The Beautiful People then made their entrance, followed by the Tag Team Champions; Sarita & Taylor Wilde, Tara, and the special guest referee; ODB. The action began, focus was quickly put on Hamada and Daffney—after headbutts to Daffney, Hamada eliminated her early on. Focus ten shifted on Alissa and Traci, as the feud between them continued. Embroiled with each other, they became susceptible—Sarita & Taylor Wilde hit double drop kicks to eliminate them both. A ringside catfight immediately broke out between Alissa and Traci. We then went to commercial, during which Tara eliminated Lacey Von Erich.

Velvet Sky and Madison Rayne then teamed up to eliminate Sarita. Immediately after, Taylor Wilde eliminated Hamada, however, unintentionally eliminating herself as well. This left Tara alone to fight off Velvet & Madison. Tara eventually eliminated both Madison and Velvet for the win.

After the match, TNA Women’s champion raised Tara’s hand in victory, however, the exchange was far from amicable on ODB’s part.

—Kristal Marshall was also on Impact!, with her future role in TNA becoming more apparent. She accompanied Bobby Lashley in both his matches, which included faking an injury to help him get a win. She also acted as his mouthpeice in a backstage segment.

—The first Knockouts match on this week’s episode of Impact was Hamada taking on one-half of the TNA Knockouts Tag Team Champions; Taylor Wilde. Hamada picked up the win after hitting her “Hamada Driver” (Michinoku driver) on Taylor While, which came just after a viscous spin kick. This was a fast-paced back and fort bout, with the ladies utilizing the time that they had as much as they could. This should be considered foreshadowing to the future challengers for the Knockouts Tag Titles—Who exactly could Hamada be teamed with?

While Hamada is great in the ring, she is in some desperate need of character development going forward. An excellent move would be to put her in the World Elite fraction, where Eric Young would be a perfect mouth piece for her. Another option would be teaming her with Alissa Flash—while they are compatible as far as in-ring styles, the ladies would have to be distinguishably heels or faces. It is a matter of pushing Alissa in the face direction, or pushing Hamada in the heel direction.

—The second Knockouts match of the show was Sarita taking on Alissa Flash. Sarita won the match with a mule kick on Alissa. This match was not as good as their previous meetings, and served as an avenue for an attack on Alissa Flash by Traci Brooks. The booking here would have made more sense for Sarita to take a loss. A loss for Sarita would have told the story of venerability with the tag team championships (opening the door for new contenders), and give Alissa momentum in her transition into a viable threat in the knockouts division.

—TNA Knockouts Champion ODB was also on the show, with the return of her now revamped backstage segment. Her guest this week was Homicide…

—The Beautiful People made an appearance on Impact as well. Velvet, Lacey and Madison were involved in a backstage segment, belittling Lauren.

—Tara is the latest TNA Knockout to be featured on Hermie’s Hotseat. Among the subjects talked about, was getting into the wrestling industry, the TNA locker room, her last few years in the WWE, and much more…
