Thank you for joining lethalwow.com once again, as we review another year in Women's Pro Wrestling. Before honoring the women 2009, Lethalwow.com will like to remember one who passed on May 8, 2009. Her name is Cynthia Johnson, better known as Princess Jasmine. She helped pave the way for women in the industry, competing against many women's wrestling greats. She was also instrumental in training wrestlers in GLOW (Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling).

This year, Lethalwow enlisted the help of up-and-comers; Sassy Stephie and Kristin Flake. Special Thanks goes out to Lethalwow forum members for contributing nominations, online voters and the panel for this feature. - Arron Carlton

2009: Wrestler of the Year

Wrestler of the Year: Mercedes Martinez (Winner!)

    Subcategory Winners:
TNA Wrestler of the Year: Tara
RAW Wrestler of the Year: Melina Perez
Smackdown! Wrestler of the Year: Michelle McCool
WSU Wrestler of the Year: Mercedes Martinez
Shimmer Wrestler of the Year: MsChif

In ten years of publishing a "Wrestler of the Year" award at Lethalwow.com, this is the first year that a non-WWE or non-TNA affiliated worker took the top spot. In 2009 for the WWE, there were two clear-cut pushed women; Melina Perez and Michelle McCool. Both of whom earned the award for "WWE - Match of the Year," for their performance at "Night of Champions." TNA on the other hand, had a number of women that shared the top spot in the Women's Division throughout the year. These women included Awesome Kong, Tara, Angelina Love, and ODB. And while Shimmer Women Athletes is the widely accepted standard for Women's Wrestling by fans online, they taped 6 shows in 2009...the rankings of athletes within the company should not realistically define what those athletes have actually done throughout the year. While the top two promotions in the United States in most cases takes precedence over others, and the cult favorite Shimmer has drastically influenced the way women of been ranked in recent years, their most pushed athletes did not top this rank at number 1.

The Lethalwow.com 2009 Wrestler of the year is Mercedes Martinez. Mercedes jumped from number 10 to number 1 on Lethalwow's Top 25 Ranking due to the incredible year she has had. This was mainly due to being the Women Superstars Uncensored Champion for the majority of the year. On March 7, 2009, Mercedes Martinez defeated Angel Orsini in a Bullrope match to win the WSU Championship. She went on to take on all comers, defending the title against the likes of Awesome Kong, Angelina Love, Roxxi, Portia Perez, and numerous wrestlers. But by far, her feud with Angel Orsini was unlike any seen all year. Of all their matches, on June 6, 2009, these women made history, placing themselves in an elite category... Mercedes Martinez defeated Angel Orsini in a 60-minute Iron Woman Match, a feat that not many women can say they accomplished. Their pure athleticism and endurance earned them the Lethalwow.com 2009 Match of the Year. Such an accomplished cannot go unrewarded. Their feud later culminated on November 7, 2009, in a turn of events, where Mercedes Martinez and Angel Orsini defeated Jessicka Havoc and Hailey Hatred to win the WSU Tag-Team Titles. Mercedes Martinez's amazing matches in WSU, along with Shimmer, and numerous other independent promotions, earned her this award... At times, being the most pushed athletes in the top companies, is simply not enough.

Disclaimer: Lethalwow.com's Power 25 of 2009 is based on various criteria in 2009--This rank is not based solely in wrestling abilities. Criteria include, championship reigns, in-ring performance, significance in 2009, critical acclaim, internet consensus, standings in respective promotions, win/loss records, and winners of various sub-category awards (e.g. Heel of the Year, Shimmer Wrester of the Year etc.).
Michelle McCool, Women's Champion
Being the most pushed Women's Wrestler in the top wrestling company in the United States, was not enough to trump Mercedes Martinez's stellar matches and adoration among her peers. Michelle McCool ranks number 2 in this year's Top 25, moving up from number 9. In 2009, she made history, by becoming the first woman to hold both the WWE Divas Championship, and the WWE Women's Championship.

Sassy Stephie's Pick: MsChif

"MsChif...Hands down, she competes around the world and has numerous titles around her waist. Including the Shimmer title which she has held onto all of 2009. She is one of the toughest, most flexible, and talented person I've seen in the ring." - Sassy Stephie

"My pick would have to be Tara. Simply because she went from WWE, to retired, to TNA where she has shown that she is not "just another pretty face." She has worked exceptionally hard to re-carve her spot in women's wrestling, and has proven to be even more than she was ever able to show during her stint in WWE." - Kristin Flake

2009: Babyface of the Year

Face of the Year: Melina (Winner!)

    Subcategory Winners:
TNA Face of the Year: Tara
RAW Face of the Year: Melina Perez
Smackdown! Face of the Year: Mickie James
SHIMMER! Face of the Year: Serena Deeb

While Mickie James remains the undisputed most over woman in wrestling today, who is often rivaled by ODB's popularity, Melina was undoubtedly the babyface of 2009. For the entirety of 2009, whether on Raw or Smackdown, she was the top face of whichever division she was placed in.

Sassy Stephie
Sassy Stephie Pick: Kelly Kelly..."How could you hate a peppy, pretty blonde like her? Fans love and adore her."

2009: Heel of the Year

Heel of the Year: Angelina Love (Winner!)

    Subcategory Winners:
TNA Heel of the Year: Angelina Love
RAW Heel of the Year: Maryse
Smackdown! Heel of the Year: Michelle McCool
WSU Heel of the Year: Angel Orsini
SHIMMER! Heel of the Year: Sara Del Rey

In 2009, Angelina Love took Awesome Kong's crown as the number 1 heel in Women's Wrestling. While Kong was clearly used as a tweaner throughout 2009, Angelina was making slews of fans love to hate her. From cutting the hair of her fellow Knockouts, to using underhanded tactics to win matches...And who else has cut amazing (yet annoying) promos like she did in 2009?

Sassy Stephie's Pick: Sara Del Rey

"Sara Del Rey...Wrestling with and against Sara this year I know first hand that she is tough as nails, she's intelligent in the ring, and she's very powerful, she is willing to put her body on the line, she doesn't care what you think and she'll let you know how she feels at any time... Plus, she takes on anyone in her path man or woman. That adds up. She is the heel of the year". - Sassy Stephie

"My pick would be Maryse. She not only makes you want to hate her with every move she makes, but she is also very original in all of her characteristics. She comes across as pompous and arrogant, yet you still cant wait to see what she might do next." - Kristin Flake

2009: Tag-Team of the Year

Sarita and Taylor Wilde
Tag-Team of the Year: Sarita and Taylor Wilde (Winner!)

    Subcategory Winner:
TNA - Tag-Team of the Year: Sarita and Taylor Wilde
WWE - Tag-Team of the Year: Michelle McCool & Layla
WSU - Tag-Team of the Year: Jessicka & Hailey Hatred
SHIMMER! - Tag-Team of the Year: Ashley & Nevaeh
Choosing a women's tag team of 2009 was an extremely hard pick, as two very worthy teams were the face of women's tag team wrestling in the US. These teams were The Beautiful People (Angelina Love and Velvet Sky), and Sarita and Taylor Wilde. These teams couldn't be more different by catering to two different aspects in sports entertainment. The Beautiful People thoroughly entertained fans with their gimmick, while Sarita and Taylor Wilde's athleticism gave a taste of great tag team action we could get from the TNA Knockout Tag Team Division. In the end, Sarita and Taylor made history, becoming the first-ever TNA Knockout Tag Team Champions.

Sassy Stephie's Pick: The Beautiful People

"The Beautiful People...They own the TNA tag division despite Sarita and Wilde having the titles. When you think Knockouts, I automatically think the Beautiful People. Despite losing their founding member this year, they still continued on...and with the newest addition in LVE, its a perfect combo. ". - Sassy Stephie

"Without a doubt, bar none would be Sarita and Taylor Wilde. Separately they are possibly two of the very best women's wrestling has to offer. The innovative moves, the technical prowess. They are both just phenomenal to watch. And they have managed to take their individual abilities and combine them into one package. They have managed to become a working unit and look flawless in doing so." - Kristin Flake

Most Over in 2009

Most Over in 2009: Mickie James (Winner!)

    Subcategory Winners:
TNA: Most Over in 2009: ODB
RAW: Most Over in 2009: Mickie James
Smackdown!: Most Over in 2009: Mickie James

The most over award is very different from babyface of year, and not exclusive to a "babyface." This is essentially based on popularity online and at live shows. With that said, despite taking a back seat to Melina Perez while on Raw in 2009, Mickie James remained the most over woman on the brand. After being drafted to Smackdown, she continued to be the woman that was able to connect to WWE fans. Kelly Kelly and Maria were among the women of the WWE that were in the running.

On the TNA side of things, it is undeniably that the Knockouts are generally well received. However, basing this award exclusively on Impact zone fans wouldn't be a fair comparison. Among the most over Knockouts across the US in 2009, was Awesome Kong, ODB and The Beautiful People.

Smackdown! - Feud of the Year: Michelle McCool vs. Melina
WSU - Feud of the Year: Mercedes Martinez vs. Angel Orsini
SHIMMER! - Feud of the Year: Cheerleader Melissa vs. Wesna Busic

In 2009, TNA and the WWE gave us feuds that never quite delivered to their full potential. Awesome Kong vs. Tara for one, had the opportunity to end the decade as one of the most memorable feuds, however, inconsistent writing made it come up short of delivering "Feud of the Year ." And while Michelle McCool vs. Melina was a great chapter in both of their careers, Michelle's lack of being over with WWE fans, took away from the rivalry.

Women Superstars Uncensored's booking of Mercedes Martinez vs. Angel Orsini was precisely what needs to be seen from women on television and on pay per view. These women battled throughout the year, which included an arch into becoming partners. It gets not better than that. Mercedes Martinez is Lethalwow's Wrestler of the year, and Mercedes Martinez(c) vs. Angel Orsini in an Iron Man match, is the match of the year.
