Thank
You! for joining lethalwow.com as we review the cream of
the crop in Women's Pro Wrestling in 2008. We would like
to take a moment to remember all the wrestlers that have
gone home to rest in 2008--Penny Banner, Judy
Grable, Margaret Garcia, Sara Lee, and wrestling promoter,
Lia Maivia.
Lethalwow enlisted the help of one-half of the Shimmer Tag-Team champions, Ashley Lane, and in anticipation of the return of Krissy Vaine to the ring, Team Blondage! Special Thanks to Lethalwow forum members for contributing nominations, online voters and the panel for this feature.

2008:
Wrestler of the Year
•
Wrestler of the Year:
Awesome Kong
(Winner!)
Sub-Categories
Winners:
• TNA Wrestler of the Year: Awesome
Kong
• RAW Wrestler of the Year: Beth
Phoenix
• Smackdown! Wrestler of the Year: Michelle
McCool
• Shimmer Wrestler of the Year: Sara
Del Rey
When on the subject of the female wrestler of 2008, various
names come into play. Beth Phoenix, Gail
Kim, Mickie James, Melina
Perez, MsChiff, Michelle
McCool, Sara del Rey and Taylor
Wilde are among a list of worthy competitors.
This is the case if they were vying for runner-up spots,
because the undisputed wrestler of the year award goes
to none other than Awesome Kong.
In a male-biased wrestling industry where women's matches
are often looked down upon, Awesome Kong's presence in
2008 drastically changed that tone, opening the doors
for the Top 2 companies to showcase their female talent's
wrestling abilities. Awesome Kong's matches
with Gail Kim were simply put, Epic!
From Final Resolution, to main eventing iMPACT!, to Gail
Kim's very last match in TNA, the wrestling world had
not seen that caliber of women's wrestling performance
on that large of a scale, in numerous years. Among the
wrestlers that stepped up to the plate against Kong in
2008 were ODB, Roxxi,
Taylor Wilde, Josie (Sojourner
Bolt), “The Portuguese Princess” Ariel,
“The Croatian Panther” Wesna Busic, Danyah
and more. A monster heel was exactly what Women's Wrestling
needed. While Kong had been terrorizing the women of Shimmer
and Japan years prior, it was in 2008 where the world
indulged in the wrath of Kong.

Perhaps the top Independent Wrestler
on WWE and TNA fans' wish list to get signed by
one of the Big 2 is MsChif. On
April 26, 2008 at the SHIMMER Volume 18 tapings,
she defeated Sara Del Rey to
win the Shimmer Championship and on April 27,
2008 she defeated Awesome Kong
to regain the NWA World Women's title. Will we
get to see MsChif in another epic match against
Awesome Kong in 2009? or top notch matches against
Sara Del Rey?

"Wrestler of the year award,
I'm going to say Gail Kim.
She took the title of first ever TNA knockout champion
and defended it with every ounce of power and determination
that her little body could hold! She gave Kong a run
for her money, and she never once backed down!"
- Ashley Lane
Runner Up: Beth
Phoenix - "She has more or less dominated the
women's division in the WWE for several months now.
She's made the girls there realize what wrestling is
all about and has had two successful runs as women's
champion." - Ashley Lane

Babyface of the Year
• Face
of the Year:
Mickie James
(Winner!)

Winners:
• TNA Face of the Year: Gail
Kim
• RAW Face of the Year: Mickie
James
• Smackdown! Face of the Year: Michelle
McCool
• SHIMMER! Face of the Year: Serena Deeb
In 2008, each company/brand, had their flagship babyface.
TNA had Gail Kim, Smackdown had Michelle
McCool, and Raw had Mickie James.
Arguably, in TNA, other faces were surpassing Gail Kim
in popularity, putting a damper on the baton given to
her by TNA management. Women like Taylor Wilde,
Roxxi and ODB undeniably
were in the running. In Smackdown's case, Michelle McCool
wasn't as "over," as the WWE booked her to be however
by all technicalities is the Smackdown babyface in 2008.
Among the Shimmer babyfaces in the running were Daizee
Haze, Sarah Stock, LuFisto
and Cheerleader Melissa.
Above the fray is Mickie James, who was
not only was given the spot as top face for numerous months,
but had the adoration of fans and the Women's title to
back it up.
| |
|
Mickie James
is by far the biggest babyface of the 2008 in our
opinion! She is always so bubbly and adorable, yet
she knows how to take care of business in the ring...she
is a doll both inside and out of the squared circle.
Mickie James definitely has the "it" factor! she connects
with the fans in a way that few girls today do. Team
Blondage gives the honor of babyface of the year to
the ever beautiful always smiling Mickie James! |

"Kong kills bitches Dead!"...period,
whoever started the saying on forums and newsites, kudos
to you. What else can be said about this Monster heel.
Whether she was destroying Gail Kim
with 3 consecutive power bombs or busting implants,
she's in a class of her own.
What an amazing eclectic year for heels. From loving
to hate The Beautiful People, to Raisha's
awful but delicious accent--"Silence!", Natalya;
the 3rd generation superstar, veteran diva; Victoria,
Vickie Guerrero, The Glamazon; Beth
Phoenix, Katie Lea, Payton
Banks, Miss Jacqueline Moore,
the breakout star; Maryse and no one
could draw heat like Jillian Hall.
Top Shimmer Heels included Cat Power,
Amber O'Neal, Portia Perez,
Rain, Jetta and Lacey.

In 2008, Managers and valets were in abundance, primarily in TNA, but seeming going extinct in the WWE. In the WWE, Katie Lea accompanied Paul Burchill and Layla El could be seen with William Regal. In TNA, there was Christy Hemme with The Rock 'n Rave Infection (Lance Rock and Jimmy Rave), Salinas with Latin American Exchange (Homicide and Hernandez), Raisha Saeed with Awesome Kong, SoCal Val with Sonjay Dutt, Rhaka Khan with Petey Williams, Jacqueline with Beer Money Inc and Sharmell with the The Main Event Mafia (Kurt Angle, Sting, Kevin Nash, Booker T, Scott Steiner).
Among them, the two most prominent managers were Jackie Moore and Sharmell. Jacqueline was instrumental in the success of Beer Money INC., playing her roll flawlessly in what is to be a history making tag-team. Sharmell on the other hand, valet to what is going to be the most praised stable in TNA history.

The Moments of 2008
2008 was a great year for Women of
Wrestling, as more athleticism was featured on a larger
scale. Wether sad, shocking or joyous, there are moments
of each year that we will always associate the year by.
Lethalwow compiles the "Moments of 2008"...
--Trish Status wrestles on Raw
On the December 22, 2008 episode of Raw, Trish Stratus
made huge return to the ring, after not wrestling in over
two years. In her hometown of Toronto, she and John
Cena defeated Beth Phoenix & Santino
Marella in a mixed-tag team match. What a Christmas
present it was for Women of Wrestling fans, to see one of
the most celebrated athletes of our time return to the ring.
Trish showed zero signs of ring-rust.
--Gail Kim leaves TNA for the WWE
Undoubtedly the most shocking occurrence of the year was
Gail Kim leaving TNA Wrestling. In 2007, when TNA sanctioned
a Women's Division, Gail Kim became the first champion and
the woman the division was built on. Gail Kim led the charge
to create a credible division that was not being seen in
the WWE, and verbally waged war against the WWE on numerous
occasions. Kim's TNA contract expired on August 20, just
after a huge match against Kong on iMPACT--both parties
did not meet an agreement, which led her to take a substantially larger offer from the WWE. Gail was the TNA Knockout no
one would have assumed would jumped ships to the WWE, especially
seeing as she was fired by the company in 2004.
--Roxxi gets her head shaved at Sacrifice
On May 11, 2008 at TNA Sacrifice, Roxxi lost a Ladder Match
against Gail Kim, with the stipulations being that she had
to shave her head. What a heart-felt moment it was as a
bloody Roxxi was shaved bald. That night, Roxxi received
a standing ovation from the crowd, which was well deserved.
