WWE Fast Lane is almost upon us. With its ambiguous car theme, you might say that we have two racers in the lane. Divas’ Champion Charlotte prepares for Sunday’s title defence against Brie Bella – by facing a fellow 3rd generation Diva and a long-time rival Natalya. Meanwhile the race between Team BAD and the former Team BAE continues – with Tamina representing the former and Sasha Banks the latter. The two are meeting in a singles match, and we can bet that Naomi and Becky Lynch will not be far away.

After being shown a lengthy clip of Team BAD beating up Becky Lynch last week, our match gets underway. Tamina shows off her power, slamming Sasha to the canvas. She throws Sasha around by her hair and goes for a back suplex. Sasha rolls off and kicks Tamina away. She’s able to hit her with double knees for two. Naomi gets up on the apron and Sasha knocks her off. She then hits a wheelbarrow bulldog to Tamina and segues into the Bank Statement!

Winner: Sasha Banks

Naomi attacks Sasha from behind, and Team BAD beat her up. Becky Lynch is here! She fends the two heels off and goes to help Sasha up…but Sasha pushes her away! She doesn’t seem grateful for Becky’s help.

Later backstage she asks her about it. She wants the two of them to be on the same page for Sunday, because if Naomi and Tamina win – then they are more likely to get to WrestleMania. Becky tells Sasha that if she’s going to let her ego get in the way, then she’s done. Sasha affirms that they’re not friends – but she hates losing. They seem to have found a common ground.

Natalya starts the match off with some fast chain wrestling, which Charlotte is able to match. Charlotte tries to taunt her, but Natalya just gives her a headlock takeover. Charlotte works to her feet and slams Natalya to the mat. Nattie responds with the slingshot atomic drop and basement dropkick. Charlotte hides in the ropes as the match goes to break. When it returns, Natalya and Charlotte are still going hold-for-hold until Nattie hits a butterfly suplex. Charlotte has to powder out of the ring, where Natalya hits her with a baseball slide. Charlotte is able to hit her with a sneaky big boot and apply a body scissors when they’re both back in the ring. Natalya tries to escape, but Charlotte turns it into a guillotine. Natalya gets to her feet, hoping for a slam, but Charlotte body blocks her. Natalya dodges a knee drop and blasts her with a discus clothesline. German Suplex sends Charlotte out of the ring – where she trips Natalya in the ring apron. She locks Natalya in the Figure 8 for the win.

Winner: Charlotte

Charlotte mockingly does a Yes Chant to celebrate – until Brie’s music plays. Brie Bella hits the ring. Charlotte tries to put her in the Figure 8 too, but Brie escapes and unleashes Yes Kicks to her. She goes for the running knee too, but Charlotte retreats. Brie even poses with the title.

Thoughts:

I remember when Smackdown was that forgettable little show that was so boring it was a chore to recap. The odds can shift indeed. We got too respectable Diva segments that hyped up the matches on Sunday in a good way. Sasha vs Tamina was short, but that made sense, so as not to give too much away. Tamina played to her strengths – throwing Sasha around the ring – and minimised her weaknesses. The short amount of time to work helped. Sasha really made me pop with her little wheelbarrow into the Bank Statement. Even with a short time to work, she still does something to make her match memorable. Naomi in particular played a good manager, and really shined in the post-match attack. It was standard build to a big tag team match and I was happy with it. The segment between Becky and Sasha added a layer of character not often seen in Divas feuds. Take how Brie and Nikki inexplicably became loving sisters again. Sasha and Becky could easily have suddenly been BFFs, but they chose to keep the story going between them. Thus it adds that air of unpredictability to the match. The obvious solution would be for Sasha and Becky to pick up the feel-good win. An even more obvious solution would be for Sasha to turn on Becky to preserve her heeldom. Some have tossed around the idea of Becky turning on Sasha instead, so look out for that. Or there’s even the possibility of too much tension between Becky and Sasha, allowing Team BAD to get the win.

Charlotte vs Natalya was a longer match and just as fun. Natalya can help anyone through a match and she always works magic with Charlotte. Their match showed some more of that great chemistry they used in their battle for the NXT Women’s Championship, with some nice creativity thrown in for good measure. Even the ending, how Charlotte set up the Figure 8, was creative. And she was able to do it herself, without help from her father. The after-match segment was what gave us the cherry on top. For some reason, Brie can just play this badass face character so well. She cannot be a mean girl heel, and yet excels at this character alone. I’m not sure what her future is with the company but if Sunday is to be her retirement match, I just hope she gives it her all and puts Charlotte over nicely on her way out. I have heard some (admittedly very silly) rumours that she could retire as Divas’ Champion. I can’t think of any way that decision wouldn’t cause an outrage. It would completely kill any momentum Charlotte has built up, especially as she and Brie haven’t exactly been feuding – or had a built-in history. The right thing to do is to have Brie put Charlotte over one last time, for the good of the division. Brie retiring as champion does nothing for anyone. I’ll admit it *could* happen. But it would be a silly decision. So let’s hope WWE let the girls just wrestle and leave it at that.

I agree 100% that Brie should not win on Sunday. WWE wants to try & replicate Trish Stratus’ retirement from 2006, but 2 things differ: 1. Trish didn’t job out to everyone on the roster before getting her moment as she was still Main Event Level, whereas Brie’s days of being on top are over. 2. Trish’s moment is memorable because nothing like that ever happened prior to it, so if Brie does win it might get a little attention for a couple of weeks & then we forget about, but Trish’s final match at Unforgiven will last forever. If WWE does give Brie the belt, it will be a piss poor rehash of Trish’s moment, but a big case of nepotism as they gave her a push just because of who her husband was. It will just be another case of Nikki playing politics to give her sister the belt & ruin the plans for Charlotte, Sasha, & Becky at Wrestlemania. Finally, it would be so disrespectful to do that to Trish for her moment, hard work, dedication, & giving us her gift in the ring, to be completely overshadowed by Brie who is nowhere near her level & never will be half has good as Trish was.

    • Bobby Calloway

I don’t see how it’s going to happen at all. Bigger stars than Brie -- Michelle McCool, Beth Phoenix -- retired with that. Trish is really the odd one out, since it’s standard protocol for a retiring wrestler to put someone else over on their last match out.

      • Francisco Baguer

As for the tag match at Fastlane, I think Naomi & Tamina should pull an upset win. After the match Sasha attacks Becky, then the next night on Raw Sasha & Becky face off, but Charlotte comes in beats up both women & then they can build up the Triple Threat Title Match for Wrestlemania.

        • conan_kun

I wonder what Naomi & Tamina can gain if they shockingly won at Fastlane, they won’t be divas title contender anyways. If Becky & Sasha lost to Naomi & Tamina at Fastlane, it won’t make them credible challengers for divas title, regardless of partners’ miscommunication or betrayal during the match.

          • Francisco Baguer

I thought the same way too, but Sasha & Becky both won their matches this week. Since they have that momentum, it would seem that maybe miscommunication or distraction would be the way to go.

            • Bobby Calloway

I will say that the momentum shift doesn’t always indicate who’s going to win. For example Bayley had all the momentum on her side going into her title win. And Michelle McCool had the momentum on her side when she won the belt off Melina. So did Beth Phoenix when she won the Divas title. So Sasha and Becky could still win

              • Francisco Baguer

I read an article from Whatculture hinting that could be 2 diva matches for Wrestlemania: one for the title & the other incorporating the rest of the roster. I believe that aside from the Charlotte, Becky, & Sasha 3 way, we might see a battle royal for everyone else. I think they should have a No. 1 contender battle royal where Naomi wins & Sasha wins the championship at Wrestlemania. Then the 2 can have a feud for the belt afterwards.

A #1 contenders’ match would be a good way to get all the others onto the card. I’d rather it not be a battle royal though. They’re always just messy disasters. I’d prefer a four way with a select few Divas. Perhaps Alicia, Naomi, Natalya and Paige against each other. Tamina really doesn’t deserve a match at Mania.

                  • Francisco Baguer

That’s a good idea. A 4 way between Naomi, Nattie, Paige, & Alicia. Have Naomi win the 4 way to become #1 contender. Sasha should win the championship at Mania, & then she & Naomi can have a feud over the belt.

                  • Francisco Baguer

I love that idea. A 4 way between Naomi, Nattie, Paige, & Alicia. Naomi could win the 4 way to become #1 contender. Sasha should win the championship at Mania, & then she & Naomi can have a feud over the belt.

                  • G.I.R.L.

Fatal four way lumberjack #1 Contender match with Naomi, Paige, Fox and Nattie as the main participants. Lumberjacks are Summer, Cameron, Tamina, Eva, Brie (assuming she isn’t tied down with whatever they’re doing for DBry at Mania) and I’m not sure what ither main roster divas there are. This way we get Cam and Tamina interfering and causing Naomi to win big at Mania. I’m also fine with bumping Fox down to lumberjack and making it a triple threat.

                    • Bobby Calloway

I don’t think Cameron, Eva, Tamina, Summer etc should be there. WrestleMania isn’t really just ‘everyone gets a turn’, it should be those who worked hard for their spots

                    • G.I.R.L.

They wouls be lumberjacks. WWE wants to feature as many divas as possible. Not as contenders of threats, but in some capacity. Lumberjacking does the job tenfold.

  • conan_kun

It’s rare to see 2 divas match on Smackdown. , when Naomi and Tamina beat down Sasha, the crowd chanted for Becky, mean that the fans had accepted her as a heroine that they can root for. Even if it’s piped in chant, mean that WWE wants Becky to be solid babyface. However, I don’t see Becky & Sasha lost at Fastlane or else it won’t make them credible challengers for divas title if they lost to Naomi & Tamina at Fastlane, regardless of partners’ miscommunication or betrayal during the match. It could be better for Becky and Sasha locked in Naomi and Tamina in Dis-Arm-Her and Bank Statement to make them tapped out at the same time, then Becky and Sasha had a post-match arguement for claiming she made her opponent tapped out first, thus Charlotte vs Becky vs Sasha at Wrestlemania will be set up later, especially Sasha and Becky talking backstage on Smackdown about a WrestleMania moment could it be the sign for they will both be in the WrestleMania title match instead of just Sasha alone.

Babyface Brie during 2014 is back, they should not turn Brie heel back to Survivor Series 2014 and let her win divas title against Nikki at Wrestlemania 31. It could be better for a few weeks ago on Smackdown during Natalya vs Charlotte in non-title match, Becky came out to confront Ric Flair to make Charlotte got distracted and Natalya picked up a win in non-title match, thus Natalya received a title shot at Fastlane to bring back their NXT Takeover match 2 years ago, at least better than Brie vs Charlotte.

    • Bobby Calloway

For some reason they don’t seem to see Natalya as a title contender. The last time she got any kind of shot was 2014 and she’s been either a manager or there to put other girls over. I can understand why but I still wish she’d get more.
