WWE Divas, Main Event Results:

Natalya vs Alicia Fox

main event

While we have two big Diva feuds battling it out on the leading programming – Charlotte vs Brie Bella for the Divas’ Championship, and Team BAD vs Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks – it’s time to shine a light on the supporting Divas in this division. We’re lucky enough that it’s a combination known for having excellent chemistry. Natalya dusts off her old act to take on a lady she’s faced many times: Alicia Fox. Each of those times has been fun in its own way, so let’s hope this one is no different.

Natalya opens quickly with a headlock takeover. Alicia slaps on a headscissors, which Natalya kips out of. She goes from a hammerlock into a headlock and smashes Alicia with a shoulder tackle. Alicia cowers in the ropes and hits a sneaky kick, followed by a backroll headscissors. Natalya goes for an early Sharpshooter but Alicia grabs onto the ropes. As the referee pulls Natalya away, Alicia boots her in the face. Natalya kicks out at two but Alicia puts on a chinlock, slamming Natalya to the mat as she tries to fight it. Northern lights suplex from Alicia for two is followed by another chinlock. Natalya escapes and counters the tilt-a-whirl backbreaker into a body block. She starts a comeback with clotheslines and a slingshot atomic drop. She dropkicks Alicia in the face and covers her for two. Alicia goes for a split-legged sunset flip – but Natalya rolls into the Sharpshooter for the win.

Winner: Natalya

Alicia throws a tantrum after her loss. Natalya tries to extend an olive branch, offering a handshake. But Alicia rebuffs her and storms off, still fuming.

Thoughts:

Whilst I’m usually biased for Alicia/Natalya matches, this one wasn’t 100% solid. There was actually a lot of sloppiness. Not in how the moves were done – but in a lot of the transitions between them. Particularly at the start, there were some points where both Divas had to drag her opponent into position. However it’s a testament to the chemistry between these two that the match still ended up being fun and enjoyable. Take the disaster that was Cameron vs Alexa Bliss on this week’s NXT; no chemistry between them + a sloppy performer = trainwreck of a match. Here we see that chemistry and familiarity with each other in the ring can salvage a few boo-boos here and there. Alicia Fox plays the perfect heel in the ring. Her offence is simple and effective, and she doesn’t overshadow her opponents. She simply dominates and puts the other woman over – leaving Natalya to be the flashy fancy one. It’s also a testament to their work rate that they’ve faced each other about twenty times and can still make the matches fun to watch. I hope that Charlotte and Brie Bella take note of this attitude when they meet in the ring at Fast Lane. I’m not sure what the point of the after-match bit was. Main Event is neutral territory after all. Are they teasing that Alicia will go back to her tantrum queen gimmick eventually? Since that was something I loved, you won’t hear a complaint out of me if that happens. Alicia should be on TV more and I’d love for her to get a storyline.

I wonder if they’re about to let Alicia break away from Team Bella due to her recent tantrum act starting last week Smackdown. Strangely they make Brie as sympathized figure due to Nikki’s injury and Bryan’s retirement to go after Charlotte’s title but Alicia as heel against Natalya. Will Alicia accompany Brie at Fastlane then cost Brie a title match, either intentionally due to being tired of being Bellas’ sidekick or unintentionally due to Charlotte cheap shots Alicia and triggers Alicia went tantrum to hit her and draw DQ.

If Brie retires at Fast Lane then that leaves Alicia on her own. Going back to the tantrum character could be a good way to stay relevant.

If Brie does retire at Fast Lane what does that mean for Nikki? Will she come back on her own as the only Bella? Will she retire with Brie? Or maybe even come back repackaged with a brand new persona/character change?

        • Bobby Calloway

Hmm well Brie’s mainly retiring to be with Bryan (if she is retiring) and wanting to raise a family. Nikki on the other hand is bound to want to be with John, who doesn’t show any signs of retiring soon. At this point they’ve differentiated the Bellas enough that Nikki could feasibly stand on her own.

The only thing WWE did differentiate them is that one was a jobber & the other got everything handed to her just because of who she was dating. The only way people can maybe respect Nikki & welcome her back with open arms, is to just repackage her & change her up a little bit. If she comes back as the same old character that she is has been for 8 years even without Brie, then it will be stupid.

Er are you forgetting that before Total Divas started that they only presented the twins as an interchangeable entity? Regardless of your feelings towards them, you can’t deny that they’ve had their own established personalities to separate themselves, as well as specific appearances and wrestling styles. Just as many people love Nikki as hate her -- and she’s known to the Total Divas audience so it doesn’t make sense to repackage her.
