WWE Divas, December 17 Smackdown Results:

Brie Bella vs Becky Lynch

Charlotte continues to enjoy her first reign as the WWE Divas’ Champion. She’s also enjoying the increased presence of her father at ringside these days. Especially since he sneakily helped her get another win on Raw. One person who’s not enjoying this is Becky Lynch. She tweeted her displeasure at Ric interfering in her match, wanting to win on her own merits. She’s got the chance now on Smackdown – as she takes on Brie Bella. We’ll see if Charlotte can keep her hands to herself.

Brie strangely comes down to the ring on her own, and Team BAD are once again sitting in the front row of the crowd. Likewise Becky goes down to the ring on her own. Brie flips her to the apron and bashes her face off the ring post. She gets a few more hits on the outside before throwing Becky back into the ring. She applies a grounded abdominal stretch – and Charlotte’s music suddenly plays. The Divas’ Champion jogs down to the ring to stand in Becky’s corner. Becky’s able to mount a sudden comeback, but Brie still knocks her down with a missile dropkick. Brie hits her with the running knee but Becky comes back with a pumphandle suplex, splash to the corner and her springboard kick. Brie shoves her into the ropes and goes for the Bella Buster but Becky blocks it and throws her back – but Charlotte trips Brie up! Becky sees this but locks the Dis-Arm-Her in anyway. Afterwards she looks troubled about how she just won.

Winner: Becky Lynch

Backstage Charlotte is congratulating Becky for the win, but the latter isn’t happy. Becky is annoyed that Charlotte interfered, as she wants to win on her own merits. Charlotte counters that she doesn’t want Becky to lose – and Ms Lynch interprets that to mean that Charlotte doesn’t think she can win on her own. She walks off angrily.

Thoughts:

So how about that? First of all, the match between Becky and Brie was pretty enjoyable. Despite being short, they still had some fun interactions – especially the stuff on the outside at the start. Brie has delivered some very bad performances lately but it was nice to see her actually on-form for a change. I did think it was weird for her to get the match here, when it was Alicia Fox who got attacked on Raw. Maybe that’s just me craving a Becky/Alicia match. Anyway I really like how this story between Becky and Charlotte is unfolding. I like how it’s playing into the relationship that’s already been established between the two. Charlotte has clearly always thought of Becky as a morality pet. Paige’s heel turn promo didn’t turn ugly until she insulted Becky, and that’s only when Charlotte got annoyed. Elsewhere she’s protected Becky from unnecessary conflict plenty of times. So now the story is that Charlotte still views Becky as her pet – but not as her equal. It definitely adds an interesting dynamic to Becky’s character. We all know she can get it done, but Charlotte is convinced that she can’t. If WWE go the right way with this, we can get a really good feud. Unlike when they’ve tried to push Charlotte and Paige, Becky is a babyface that’s actually pretty likeable. So if WWE pull the trigger on her, she may succeed where her predecessors have failed. But I still have to wonder what on Earth they’re doing with Team BAD. I can appreciate that they’re being given TV time – but it would be nice to get some clarification as to what they’re doing. Are they going after the Divas’ Championship too? Or are they just being thrown out there and expected to make sense of it themselves?

Now Team BAD is changed from female version of The New Day to Cosmic Wasteland who sitting in the crowd. I hate WWE turns Sasha into comedy heel, I don’t want the excuse with “WWE is slowly building her”. She’s ready to roll and is arguably the best female wrestler in the world and is way better than Charlotte and even Becky. Instead they’re turning her & Team BAD to New Day 2.0 even though they have so much potential to be a great heel faction. They can’t turn the BOSS to a comedy act. She is The Boss, not Santino Marella.

I hope Becky won’t turn heel or sell out to Flairs, she should stay as babyface and challenge Charlotte’s divas title. The worst scenario for Charlotte/Becky is Becky and Charlotte teased break up for weeks but eventually Becky joins Flairs’ dark side and continued to be Charlotte’s sidekick who keeps doing dirty works for Charlotte instead of going after Charlotte’s divas title, like Brie did for Nikki.

    • Bobby Calloway

What makes you think Becky will turn heel? She’s literally the only babyface in the division -- as once again everyone’s either a heel or undetermined. She’s being built up sympathetically and Charlotte is the clear heel in all this.

      • conan_kun

Because after seeing WWE always booked nonsense, like last year when Brie looked to be top babyface diva but suddenly booked her turned heel, reunited with Nikki and killed her babyface character, made me think they won’t book Becky as babyface since they preferred all main roster divas to be catty

        • Bobby Calloway

Well the only reason Brie was turned back heel was because the E Network demanded the sisters be back together in time for Total Divas to return.

For the same reason Conan just said but also they might want Nikki to come back (whenever that may be) as a babyface and want her to be the most over babyface in that division, if they stay the course with Becky she might be more over as a face than Nikki, at least in terms of crowd reaction anyway. Turning Becky would get her out of the way in the babyface department.

Of course they could do two storylines, one between Charlotte and Becky and the other one (which will probably be the more popular program) between Sasha/BAD and Nikki/Team Bella..but forgive me if I don’t trust WWE to do such thing given their history of booking, especially with the women.

        • conan_kun

I got an idea for booking 2 storylines in divas division

          1) Charlotte and Becky team up against Brie and Foxy or 2 members of Team BAD again, late in the match, Charlotte interfered behind referee back and dragged Becky to cover their fallen opponent, Becky slapped Charlotte away, both of them do shoving match, ended up brawling with referees separate them, Becky got the mic and said she wants to challenge Charlotte’s divas title. Charlotte accepted Becky’s challenge.

          2) Charlotte/Becky looks to feud, next week on Raw for Slammy Awards edition, Sasha, Paige and Nikki thought that they may win Diva of the Year, when the winner got the speech, two losers interrupted respectively and said she should be Diva of the Year by giving a reason:

          - Sasha said she’s the one made the headline of women wrestling and delivered the top quality women wrestling matches this year
          - Nikki said she became the longest reigning divas champ this year
          - Paige said if not because of her ending AJ Lee’s 295 days reign, Nikki will not become the longest reigning divas champ

Then set up Sasha vs Nikki vs Paige for Slammy Awards trophy for Diva of the Year at stake

What are they doing with Team B.A.D? Why were they sitting in the front row, without even attempting to jump the barricade & interfere in the match? It came across as the intention of saying “Look don’t forget about these three!” I was enjoying their mini-feud with Natalya but it seems like this is yet again another example of the problem booking stables and multiple people at once: someone is eventually gonna get left out. I would not mind having a different feud per program, but it seems like every few months they dabble with the idea and then ultimately drop it.

    • Bobby Calloway

Nattie seems to have disappeared altogether. I hope this is building towards Team BAD getting involved and not just the latest ‘throw them out there and try and make sense of it’ strategy since they’ve run out of people to job out to Sasha

      • Francisco Baguer

Thats the problem. They have run out of people for Sasha to beat, in fact they are running out of ideas period. Becky & Brie have fought each other so much its ridiculous. The problem that has plagued this so called “revolution” was being limited to only 9 divas. It was because of limiting themselves to a handful of women, that pretty much blew their load in a 3-4 month period, so now they are left with nothing & have to resort to rematches & pointless tag matches.

Yeah, since they made into 3 factions, their opponents are too limited, Sasha haven’t face Charlotte, Natalya in main roster yet, she may face Naomi after Team BAD broke up. Sasha may not need to take her first pinfall loss at least until Wrestlemania, even The Shield, The Wyatt Family took their first pinfall loss on Smackdown, example Becky vs Sasha on Raw or Smackdown before Wrestlemania, Naomi and Tamina tried to interfere but backfired like bumped on each other, then Becky pinned Sasha to win, after the match Sasha argued with Naomi for costing her single match undefeated streak and brawled, signaled that Team BAD broke up.

          • Francisco Baguer

I want Team BAD to split because of how they are turing Sasha into a joke & completely destroying her boss character. Naomi is still underrated & she should be a babyface again & feud with Sasha once wither of them become champion. I really want to see Naomi win the belt & then after sometime Sasha can get her moment to become champion.

One thing that bothers me is why Becky is still hanging out with Charlotte? You think Becky would want nothing to do with her now that Charlotte turned heel, but they are unnecessarily dragging this out for no reason. Its just like what did to Paige after she turned heel & cut that huge shoot promo on Becky & Charlotte, but kept teaming up with them like nothing happened. This is a prime example of how these people are booking these women like garbage.

        • Bobby Calloway

They’re taking it slowly. They shouldn’t rush a break-up. Charlotte needs to properly do something really nasty to establish herself as a heel and give fans a reason to rally behind Becky. We know she will turn on Charlotte eventually but that moment needs to have meaning. For example a friendship in real life doesn’t implode over a couple of disagreements. It builds and festers over time until something big splits it up

  • conan_kun

So funny that Brie, Becky and Charlotte did pinky swear and teamed up against Team BAD then won in today live event, I know usually we saw wrestlers randomly team up at house shows but still kind of awkward.

    • Bobby Calloway

Once again they’re running short on babyfaces and some of the heels have to double up. It’s a shame they treat the division like this.
