WWE Divas, September 7 Raw Results:

RAW_1163_Photo_177-873152444

Last week on Raw, we were introduced to two new developments. The first is that Nikki Bella has introduced a ‘Bellatron’ counting down the days until she becomes the longest reigning Divas’ Champion in history. And once again this week, she and the rest of Team Bella will be out to remind us of it. But that brings us to development number two: Charlotte last week beat the clock to become the official #1 contender. And on Smackdown, she teased getting the actual match moved ahead. What’s more is that Sasha Banks sabotaged Paige in her attempts to become number one contender last week – so we’ve got a rematch between them.

It seems that, although Naomi’s music takes priority in tag matches, Sasha still has her own theme. She also has to cower in the ropes when the bell rings. Paige is out for blood and throws Sasha around the ring by her hair. Paige blocks a kick and faceplants The Boss, also throwing some elbows in the corner. Sasha is however able to land her double knees to the midriff just before a commercial break. Sasha has the stranglehold on when the match resumes, but Paige escapes and mounts her with a Thesz Press. Sasha knocks her back down with a forearm and then stomps her in the corner. She hits Paige with two low knees and distracts the referee so that Tamina get a cheap shot in. Paige gets a small package for two but Sasha slams her back down by the hair. Sasha puts the stranglehold on again but Paige fights to her feet. Sasha puts her on the top rope and then pulls her down again. Paige kicks out at two and is able to come back with a knee to the corner. She boots Sasha and hits her with a knee to the face. Paige goes for a scoop slam, Sasha rolls off and goes for a crossbody – but Paige catches her and preps the Ram-Paige. Sasha escapes and flees the ring – so Paige takes out Tamina with a cannonball press. Sasha attacks Paige from behind and throws her into the ring. She goes for a wheelbarrow – but Paige counters into a suplex. Sasha kicks out at two so Paige goes for the PTO but Naomi interferes. This distracts Paige long enough for Sasha to small package her for two.

Winner: Sasha Banks

Later in the night Team Bella come down to the ring. Alicia and Brie take turns introducing Nikki as the champion. Nikki pompously thanks all the fans and once again introduces the Bellatron. And when she becomes the longest reigning champion, there will be a ‘Bellabration’. But the proverbial party is crashed by Team PCB. Charlotte says that PCB love a party and wonders why they weren’t invited to Nikki’s. She also says that the Authority granted her wish to have a Divas’ Championship match next week. She fully intends to win the title and prevent Nikki from breaking that record. And PCB immediately attack and clear the ring. Charlotte spears Nikki and locks her in the Figure 8. After Nikki taps out, the rest of Team Bella help her escape.

Thoughts:

Raw was wonderfully satisfying this time around. Starting off with the match, I loved practically everything about it. It was intense, it was heated and it was aggressive. It was everything you’d expect and want as a follow-on to last week’s little stunt. Personally I think this is when Paige is at her best. If you give her a storyline reason to be pissed off and she then unloads in the ring, you’ll get gold. Thankfully Sasha is able to be that extra bit bitchy and heelish enough to warrant such a reaction. It also goes to show the positive effect that Sasha is having on the division. Not a few months ago, Paige was floundering as a babyface and shaping up to be another failed NXT call-up. But now with this Divas Revolution, some added storyline spice and some top Divas to work with, Paige is finally getting close to reaching the levels that were expected of her when she was called up. This match felt like a fight and I just loved all the intensity. I even liked the little bits of interference from Team BAD; they’re getting to be quite an effective heel stable and managing to avoid falling into the third wheel trap in this storyline. Sasha gets yet another sneaky win over Paige and it lends more credence to my theory that I’ll explain below.

The promo was almost exactly what I’ve been asking WWE to do for weeks now. It was simple but effective. Team Bella were established as the heels of the division and sold their motivation to the audience. Likewise PCB got to sell their goals too. The mic work from all Divas involved was stellar. Even Brie managed to deliver her lines without sounding forced or corny. Nikki I think delivered her best promo yet. She’s at her best when she’s really going the full hog with sounding pompous and sarcastic. The only gripe I had was Charlotte attacking her first. It’s a small pet peeve of mine but I don’t like faces acting like heels. The attack was just mean-spirited and very heelish. It would have been better to have Nikki attack first and give Charlotte a reason to fight back. But I’m not going to complain when we got that much desired character development at last. I love the added spice of having the title match next week. I’m genuinely intrigued to find out where this goes. But I doubt the finish will be smooth. The reason I feel this way is the fact that Sasha has remained quietly in focus as well. She’s picked up steady wins in all her matches, which is not something you do if WWE don’t have some kind of plan in mind. So I expect that Sasha will interfere in the match next week and set the stage for a triple threat at Night of Champions. WWE would be fools not to include Sasha in this – and I think they know it too.

If Charlotte wins the title next week, then I see her beating Nikki in a rematch at Night of Champions then the next night on Raw, Charlotte celebrates & Paige turns on her leading to a feud for the belt.

    • Bobby Calloway

I don’t know. Somehow I don’t see Charlotte winning. I don’t think she should win too soon. As the next big babyface of the division, her win shouldn’t happen right away. There should be swerves and tricks by the heels to try and delay her as much as they can. Like Bayley’s title win. It wouldn’t have meant anything if she’d won it from Charlotte the first time. It meant much more because she spent so long trying to win it. WWE shouldn’t risk putting her over too soon

      • Francisco Baguer

Your right cause it would be like when Goldberg won the world title from Hogan on Nitro instead of on PPV. If Charlotte doesn’t win, then I see one of two things happening. 1. Paige will turn heel & cost Charlotte the title, leading to a big feud between them. 2. Sasha interferes in the match, attacks both Nikki & Charlotte, grabs a mic & say she made Nikki tap a few weeks ago & deserves a shot, which will lead to a Triple Threat match between Nikki, Charlotte, & Sasha for the title at Night of Champions. Which one do you think will happen?

Triple threat is most likely. They might want Paige’s heel turn to be a slow burner. But then again we’re not the writers. For all we know, the title could change hands in a game of musical chairs

          • Charlie Flickinger

OMG! TAKE THAT BACK RIGHT NOW! Don’t give the WWE any ideas of how to do crazy ass title changes! *Praying the evil thoughts away*

            • Bobby Calloway

Eh as long as the music’s good I wouldn’t mind too much ;)

        • Kalkofen

Both of them have high probability, but it seems like Paige is definitely turning, it’s just a matter of when IMO. I kinda wanted her and Becky to form somewhat of a separate unit from Charlotte and ultimately outcast her, leaving an opening for Nattie to come to Charlotte’s aid. And Sasha demanding her title shot is inevitable. A curveball in the form of Becky or Naomi would be nice as well

          • Francisco Baguer

Speaking of Naomi, I would like to throw this out there as a fan of hers. The fact that the replaced her on Total Divas is just terrible. I dislike that show, but even I think it wrong to brush her aside like this. Now they are replacing her with some Tough Enough reject who won’t have the time to train & improve cause she on TD now. We’ve seen Naomi as a nice & respectful woman, in & out of the ring, so what did she do to rub management the wrong way? Ever since they turned her heel, they mistreated her so much to the point where she’s just there to put on good matches, keep her mouth & don’t dare to get over because as soon she gets over to point where people started liking her, they would start to put the screws to her & try bring her down.

            • Kalkofen

I completely agree, it’s baffling they replaced her with Amanda when ratings have gone up every time she’s the focal point of an episode. She’s always plays the mediator/peacemaker on the show but you can truly see this is who she is, calm and collected and level-headed and honestly the realest woman there. I will never understand what their problem is with her in terms of pushing her as a performer, especially with how much talent she possess along with the fact her heel turn overshadowed our current champion (I’m a fan but let’s be honest) among others and featuring her on this show. Her and Jimmy are too good for it.

              • Francisco Baguer

Its true. WWE brags about how TD is a ratings success when they can’t even reach 1 million viewers, unless Naomi is the focal point so I hope it bites them in the ass. With Naomi gone, I bet the ratings will go down the toilet & they’ll have no choice but to cancel, but thats just me.

                • Bobby Calloway

I didn’t know they’d replaced her with Amanda. I hope she doesn’t turn into another Summer Rae and cause all sorts of cringey worked shoot storylines. As much as I hate to play the race card, I wonder if that’s the reason Naomi has never been pushed too long. Vince has either favoured blondes or Latinas with very little in-between. Any Diva with a darker complexion has never held the title that long (Alicia, Layla). I wonder if Sasha can break the tradition.

                  • Francisco Baguer

I’m honestly afraid they’ll turn Amanda into another Eva Marie because now she doesn’t have the time to train or improve her in ring skills from Tough Enough. As far as you playing the race card is concerned, I 100% agree & the fact that Vince prefers blondes & Latinas, but not Blacks is sickening. It shows you that Vince is an even bigger racist than Hulk Hogan is, but somehow he doesn’t get punished the way Hogan did. If Sasha breaks the tradition, I would to see her & Naomi have feud with each other & see how that goes.

I was going to type a lengthy response but you’ve just helped inspire an entire article. Y’all watch this space

                    • Francisco Baguer

I just read your article & its really well done. I’m glad I was the one who inspired you to do it.

                    • Bobby Calloway

Take a bow my friend hehe. I was surprised with how many examples there were. As I was writing, I felt sure I’d find one that would contradict me. But I do feel that Sasha will be the one to finally get there -- if she hasn’t already

  • conan_kun

Now Team PCB feuded with Team Bella and Team BAD at the same time, Team Bella and Team BAD had no more issue between each other already, ended up 3 babyfaces vs 6 heels.

If Nikki broke AJ Lee’s record, Divas Revolution is completely a farce or already a farce since Day 1, just a cheap tactic to make us focus on teams trading wins and losses to extend Nikki’s title run.

But we know Nikki won’t lose title next week on Raw, WWE creative team always book nonsense, no surprise if they book Paige costs Charlotte her title match due to silly jealousy, making Paige forgot that she always said she wanted to end Bellas dominance every times.

  • conan_kun

The best way for next week divas title match is Nikki and Charlotte scoring double pinfalls leading to no winner thus divas title is vacated, then they announced title match at Night of Champions, perhaps not just Nikki vs Charlotte, they may throw Paige and Sasha in to make it Fatal 4 Way.

    • Bobby Calloway

hmm vacate the title? That’s something I didn’t think of. I feel Sasha probably will be included somehow, not sure about Paige…
