WWE Main Event – January 7 Divas Match:

Nikki Bella w/Brie Bella vs Paige w/Natalya

Well now, it’s the first Main Event of the New Year. While Raw didn’t exactly give the girls much time, it seems Main Event is here to pick up the slack. Our Divas’ Champion Nikki Bella may have suffered a loss to Natalya, but she’s hoping to get back on track. It won’t be easy for her however – as she’s got to deal with her newest fellow Total Divas cast mate. Nikki Bella takes on Paige in non-title action.

Paige has brought Natalya down to the ring with her, presumably to counteract Brie Bella’s presence at ringside. Nikki knocks Paige down with a shoulder tackle before getting on top with a lock-up takedown. Paige comes back with a series of head-butts (which either don’t connect or Nikki no-sells). Nikki responds with her springboard pele kick, Paige kicking out at two. Paige rolls Nikki up, Nikki rolls through and Paige kicks her in the face. Paige delivers some stomps in the corner and so Nikki powders out. They go to a commercial break as she climbs back into the ring. When they return, Paige is delivering her series of knees to Nikki’s chest. Nikki leaves the ring again so Paige grabs onto her hair. Nikki however is able to flip Paige off the apron. Miss Hell In Boots nearly misses the ten count, but Nattie helps her back in. Nikki drops Paige’s arm off the ropes and immediately slaps on an arm bar.

Paige works to her feet and tries to fight Nikki off with punches. However Nikki hotshots her arm-first onto the top rope. She even stands on Paige’s shoulder. Nikki continues to dominate by working over Paige’s arm. Paige tries to come back with forearms but is immediately clotheslined by the champ. Nikki goes back to working over the arm, locking in another arm bar. Paige escapes the hold and hits a Thesz Press on Nikki. However she is put down once again with a clothesline. Paige is now trapped in a cross arm breaker, trying to stop Nikki from separating her hands. She is able to turn the submission into a pin, but the Divas’ Champion kicks out – and goes back to an arm bar. Paige counters this and is able to arm drag Nikki to escape. Paige now mounts a comeback with short-arm clotheslines and a dropkick. She goes to the top rope – but Brie distracts her! Nikki throws Paige down as Natalya goes after Brie. Nikki kicks Natalya through the ropes – and is rolled up by Paige! The Divas’ Champion reverses it and ducks a kick. Nikki hits a forearm but Paige comes through that with a big kick. She’s then able to connect with the Ram-Paige for the win! Paige has pinned the Divas’ Champion!

Winner: Paige via the Ram-Paige

Thoughts:

Main Event certainly put me in a much better mood than Raw did. First of all, the Divas got time. Second of all, it means we’re actually progressing a storyline. We’ll talk about the match first; we haven’t really seen Nikki work much with Paige since Night of Champions. They had a heel vs heel singles match on Smackdown before that, where Nikki played the face. This time Nikki got to be the heel and dominate. And this might be the first really solid match she has had since becoming the champion. She showed a great awareness of psychology in working over Paige’s arm. She didn’t just slap on the one rest hold and leave it there, like in the Bella Twins matches of yore. She worked the arm properly and controlled things nicely. She was booked very well and came out of the match looking like a champ. The crowd also got behind her in parts; I expected them to be completely pro-Paige but they definitely popped for Nikki in parts. The only thing that didn’t look solid was that series of head-butts. I couldn’t tell if Paige was actually connecting or Nikki just wasn’t selling. Either way, they didn’t look good. Besides that, there was a definite chemistry between the two. Neither Paige nor Nikki has chemistry with everyone – but they played off each other very well. It was a nice slow-paced match. Paige returns to being a face for the night, though it remains to be seen if that’ll stick. She showed during her first Divas’ Championship reign that she really can’t be a full-on face in the ring. And she also doesn’t seem to be able to cut it as a full-on heel either. Paige’s character seems to work best as a wild card that is only out for herself. And that is the reason why I doubt this face turn will stick. I misread the announcement about this match and thought that it was for the title. Since it wasn’t, Paige winning does give a hint as to the next logical step in the storyline. Natalya and Paige have now both pinned the Divas’ Champion. You can be sure that they’ll both be vying for the title – hopefully culminating in a triple threat match. That does seem to be the definite route they’re going down, especially with this sudden friendship that’s developed out of nowhere. Natalya’s presence at ringside seems to support it as well. Methinks that Paige’s thoughts of friendship will go right out the window when she has a chance to get the title again.

That match was solid, it wasn’t a fast paced back and forth or a spotfest. It was a psychological match that told a story and told it well. Nikki looked great and Paige blocking the Armbar spot was great. Nikki showed great ability while working the arm with diffent holds, and Paige sold like a champ. My only gripe is that Nikki works and moves like a heel but she keeps calling for face reactions, which kind of throws it off (She needs to watch Steen/Owens in NXT to see how heeling is done). But that is her actual only remaining problem, so that’s great.
I hope that they don’t try to keep Paige face, she works well as a Heel and will go over the moon as a Tweener. So here’s hoping Nattie catches a boot to the face next week and we can set up a 3 Way Dance at RR.

Hmm I noticed that as well. I think the crowd could have popped for Nikki in places because she looked like she was pandering to them. Agreed about Paige as a face; she herself even said she can’t play one, a she says she looks fake whenever she smiles. I think if she’s going to be a heel, she needs to watch Kevin Owens as well -- since her recent heel performances don’t make her come across that villainous. Which is probably why this sudden friendship with Nattie doesn’t feel too out of nowhere

I agree. The match was pretty good, and I hope we get to see them deliver a similar type of match Sunday (22 Feb) at Fast Lane.

What do you think about Fatal 4-way divas championchip match Nikki vs. Brie vs. Natalya vs. Paige?

    • Bobby Calloway

ooh I like that idea. Imagine if the Bellas teamed up but then Nikki sneakily rolled up Brie for the win? Be a great way to build towards the Bellas against each other at WrestleMania

      • Jayla

Or Brie reveals her faked heel turn by causing Nikki lose title?

        • Bobby Calloway

Yeah that would be another good idea. Either way I think it’s definitely gonna be the Bellas against each other at WrestleMania

Umh I wasn’t actually quite into the Bellas feud last year, so I’d hate to see that happening again lol.

I actually thought of the same thing. But I’m kinda more open to having Natalya vs Paige now at WrestleMania. At Fast Lane have Paige win the title, then Natalya comes out after the match and attacks her. Nattie then talks about how Paige stole her spot for the title. She demands a title shot at WM, and she gets it. Nattie vs Paige (the 2 most experienced divas in the WWE) will put on a great match.
