WWE Divas – May 15, 2014 NXT Results:

Charlotte vs Alexa Bliss [Semi-Finals For The NXT Women’s Championship]

Last week on NXT we saw the last round of Quarter Final matches to determine the new NXT Women’s Champion. Charlotte advanced by defeating Emma while newcomer Alexa Bliss scored an upset over Alicia Fox. This week we narrow down the next champion even more with the first Semi-Final match. Charlotte will face Alexa. Can Ms Bliss make lightning strike twice? Or will the Dirtiest Diva In The Game sneak herself another win?

Alexa is out first with some new gear – and plenty of sass and personality. Charlotte naturally has Sasha in her corner. The crowd chants for both women. Alexa hops on Charlotte’s back with a sleeper hold. Charlotte rams her into the corner and gets a boot and elbow in the face. Alexa does her somersault roll off the top rope again – and goes for the tilt-a-whirl small package she used to defeat Alicia Fox. Charlotte kicks out at two and knees Alexa in the gut. She chokes Alexa at the ropes before locking in an abdominal stretch. Alexa is able to roll out and school girl Charlotte for two. Charlotte knocks her back down with a clothesline, then placing Alexa into the Tree of Woe. After some more woman-handling, Charlotte puts the abdominal stretch back on. And Alexa gets out of it in the exact same way. Alexa throws a few punches and kicks before connecting with a sunset flip for two. She goes for a crossbody but Charlotte catches her and hits a backbreaker. Alexa kicks out at two but Charlotte stretches her across her knee, shaking her around like a rag doll. Alexa is able to fight out but gets quickly choked against the ropes. Alexa goes for another crossbody and Charlotte gives her another backbreaker. She follows that up with her somersault snapmare driver – which is apparently now called ‘Bow Down To The Queen’ (only one syllable less than the technical name). That gets her the win and she has advanced to the semi-finals.

Winner: Charlotte via Bow Down To The Queen

Well this would be an interesting match-up for three reasons. First of all in Alexa’s debut match, a couple of botches were apparently edited out – so we would have to see how she’d fare in the second attempt. Second of all, Alexa was rumoured to be a new member of the BFFs – so she would be facing a woman she nearly got as a partner. And third of all, it would be Charlotte’s first match as the more experienced worker – so it would be up to her to lead the match. There are also three things about this match that I would like to criticise; the first of which is that the girls were repeating spots. There’s nothing wrong with using a submission hold twice in a match. But when you repeat the way to get out of it, it just looks bad. It was a similar situation with the crossbody into the backbreaker. The crowd even chanted “boring” after the girls repeated the spots. There were a couple of rookie mistakes in there like that sloppy Irish whip near the beginning – and Alexa ducking a clothesline before Charlotte had even thrown it. But these girls are new and those things will disappear eventually. The final criticism is that Alexa got no comeback towards the end. A big move or something fancy before Charlotte put her away would have made the ending look better. It looked very anti-climactic and rather lame. I don’t think a second crossbody attempt really counts as a good last-second comeback.

Besides that, the match was fine enough. In spite of repeating her spots, I was impressed with Charlotte. This is the kind of thing I’ve wanted to see from her ever since she debuted. She’s a big muscly girl so she should dominate her opponents. I loved how she was working moves like the abdominal stretch. They’re such simple submission holds but she looked like she was properly punishing Alexa. She dominated the match perfectly and played the aggressor very well. She seems to be developing a very old school style of wrestling – moves like the abdominal stretch and the backbreaker she used were commonly seen in the matches of Wendi Richter, Leilani Kai, Princess Victoria etc. It’s a touch that I really like, come to think of it; if Charlotte is honouring her father then it makes sense that she’d use an old school style. It’ll set her apart from the rest of the Divas. Now for Alexa; in her second match she had another fairly good performance – in spite of the above criticisms. I really enjoyed her selling. When Charlotte had her in the holds, her selling was very good. WWE seem keen to present her as the ragdoll babyface that Kelly Kelly made a career out of. Alexa was certainly able to get feisty the way Kelly did and she has this natural charm that seems to be causing fans to root for her. Another thing I liked was that she wasn’t a static dead fish in the ring. She fought back and threw a few strikes to break up the monotony of Charlotte’s offence. She told a good story out there, playing the scrappy underdog trying to use hit-and-run tactics to outsmart Charlotte. She seems like she’ll be able to play the cat-and-mouse game just fine for now. The story may have had an anti-climactic ending but it’s the thought that counts. Charlotte now has a spot in the finals and next week Sasha has a chance to get there too. She takes on Natalya in the semi-finals.

I am so happy for Charlotte she is the future of the divas division.

    • Bobby Calloway

She’s really stepped it up in recent months. She’s going to play a big role in the division

        I think so too.
