The Funkadactyls defeat AJ Lee and Layla

On the August 19, 2013 episode of WWE RAW, in Women’s Wrestling action was WWE Divas Champion AJ Lee and Layla taking on The Funkadactyls…

Before The Funkadactyls made their way to the ring, fellow Total Divas stars The Bella Twins gave them a warning to win their match, because they were representing Total Divas.

WWE Divas – August 19, 2013 RAW Match:
AJ Lee & Layla vs. Naomi and Cameron

—The Funkadactyls were out to the ring first for this match. Followed by Layla and later AJ Lee. Layla and AJ Lee ambushed Naomi and Cameron from behind before the bell to start the match. Layla threw Cameron to ringside, leaving Naomi in the ring with AJ Lee. Naomi was never able to fully recover from the attack, and was on defense the entire match as AJ Lee dominated. The finish of the match saw Naomi hit AJ with an enziguri, followed by them attempting to tag in their respective partners. AJ Lee was able to tag in Layla first, who quickly ran to the opposite side of the ring to knock Cameron off the apron. Naomi then got a quick roll-up on Layla for the win…

Winner: The Funkadactyls

Thoughts: After Summer Slam (WWE SummerSlam 2013 Review), this match felt like a filler. It was simply a “Total Divas” promo segment, having nothing to do with the two feuds we have seen from the Divas in recent weeks; AJ Lee vs. Kaitlyn, and Natalya versus The Bella Twins. I was also not a fan of Naomi being booked as the babyface in peril in this match. Her flashy arsenal definitely needed to be showcased in this match.

Layla’s reaction at the end was cringe worthy! It distracted from the whole match. I used to be a big Layla fan, but I’ve given up hope that she can return to how great she was from 2009-2011. She’s been with WWE for about 7 years now and i struggle to see what else she has to offer. Maybe she should start managing again because the AJ partnership seems really forced. I agree about Naomi. Her in-ring talent shouldn’t be held back. Would love to see a feud between her and AJ, if WWE drops the ball with the Natalya push they’ve started.

Let’s face it, she just wasn’t that good in LayCool. She was a decent heel back on ECW but we were just happy to have a Diva with a character in 2010. It worked because she had Michelle to balance her out as the straight (wo)man. I’ve seen three matches since her turn and it confirms to me that she just can’t play a heel. I just think about how much better Alicia Fox or Aksana could have performed if they’d been given her spot. I know not everyone agrees with me but face seemed to be a much better fit for her. She was much more natural in that role. If she doesn’t get released I see her turning back face pretty soon. That tends to happen when WWE turn people into roles they’re just not good at -- Alberto Del Rio, Christian, Torrie Wilson etc.

Totally agree about Aksana and Alicia Fox. Alicia is so underrated and Aksana seems to be improving. This Layla heel turn reminds me of when they turned Melina heel not long before her release. Difference was that Melina was amazing as a heel. It’s such a shame that Layla might end her career with WWE like this. She has no connection with the crowd.

I think Melina got de-pushed because she was a bit reckless with her Twitter account. I think during the feud with Natalya she tweeted “it’s just a storyline” and she started posting blogs titled “Why I Turned Heel” and such. I agree it’s a shame that this could be how Layla ends up because she’s a very good wrestler and I’d rank her second after Natalya on the roster. And at least Melina got to be face for three years before she turned back heel so she’d run her course. While Layla was heel for five years and only face for one, I feel she has a lot more to offer in that role
