WWE SummerSlam 2013 Review

On August 18, 2013, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, for World Wrestling Entertainment’s SummerSlam 2013 Pay-Per-View, the WWE Divas were in mixed-tag team and singles action..

“Total Divas” star Jo Jo Offerman opened Summer Slam with a rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner. This was quite the spotlight for her. Earlier, at SummerSlam Axxess, Maria Menounos joined other Total Divas cast members as she teamed up with Natalya to defeat Brie Bella and Eva Marie. Natalya and Brie pulled double duty, wrestling in singles competition later on the Pay-Per-View…

WWE Divas – SummerSlam 2013 Match
Brie Bella vs. Natalya

Natalya’s music hit, and she made her way to the ring with The Funkadactyls; Naomi and Cameron. Brie Bella made her way to the ring next, accompanied by her sister Nikki Bella and Eva Marie (Damn!). This was a fast-pace hard-hitting match, and who does not like a slap-off? Brie Bella was a great heel in the match, but in the end Natalya was able to apply her sharpshooter for the win…

Winner: Natalya

Later on the show, we got mixed tag team action involving Kaitlyn and Divas Champion AJ Lee…

WWE Divas – SummerSlam 2013 Match
Mixed tag team match
Dolph Ziggler and Kaitlyn vs. Big E Langston and AJ Lee

—The team of Dolph Ziggler and Kaitlyn made their way to the ring first, followed by AJ Lee and then Big E Langston. The action started off with Dolph and Big E, in which Big E dominated. Aj Lee tagged herself in but did not fare well in the ring with Kaitlyn initially. She was later able to get a spin kick in on Kaitlyn to gain control. After being on defense for some time, Kaitlyn was finally able to tag in Ziggler after she got a flying shoulder block on AJ. Dolph took the fight to Big E; however Big E was eventually able to use his power to gain control. On defense, Ziggler was able to counter one of Big E’s moves and follow-up with the Zig Zag for the win…

Winner: Dolph Ziggler and Kaitlyn

Thoughts: After missing Raw and Smackdown for the past few weeks, I went into SummerSlam 2013 cold. It was great to see the WWE Divas shine in two matches, one of those matches we would not have seen if it was not for “Total Divas.”

In the first Divas match of the night was Natalya vs. Brie Bella—I can’t say that I am much of a follower of fashion when it comes to the Divas, but these ladies looked great. The Bella Twins and Eva Marie’s throwback summer wear was a win. It was a nice touch, which gave their match a grand feel. As for the match, Brie and Natalya did a great job, and the involvement from Nikki, Eva Marie and The Funkadactyls was just right. The match was not any ground breaking 5-star match, but it served its purpose. The rowdy Summer Slam crowd was a plus, although most of their chants were not related to the match at all.

This was a big win for Natalya. She has been  stuck as a jobber and with the comedy gimmick with Khali for the past few years. Who would have thought we would be seeing her pick up a victory at Summer Slam. Total Divas on E! has payed off for her, as well as for the 6 other Divas staring on the show. Jo Jo Offerman of course stole the show with her great rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner.

Dolph Ziggler and KaitlynThe booking of the mixed tag team match was predictable. While Kaitlyn did not get the pin for her team, the win was needed to continue the feud with AJ Lee. It would be great to see these two women in some sort of stipulation match in the future.

I enjoyed the singles match more than the mixed tag. Brie did all her moves well but she showed still how extremely limited she is considering she went back to the same rest hold three times -- and not a very effective one at that. However it was nice to see the girls get time and I especially liked the reversal of the first Sharpshooter. When I saw the mixed tag and Ziggler/Langston’s fast offence, my first thought was “they’ve had their time cut”. The stuff between Kaitlyn and AJ was good but it felt more akin to what we’d get on Raw. You’d expect them to pull out some more oomph for the 2nd biggest PPV of the year. I wasn’t expecting to get any intergender spots so the ones we did get were a nice surprise. I love how they really sold it as a big deal Kaitlyn breaking up a pin. Anyway Kaitlyn wasn’t on Raw so methinks she’s done with AJ for now, since Ziggler didn’t interact with her at all either
