AJ Lee becomes WWE Divas Champion

On June 16, 2013, at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois, for World Wrestling Entertainment’s Payback 2013 Pay-Per-View, Kaitlyn defended the WWE Divas Championship in a match against AJ Lee…

WWE Divas – Payback 2013 Match
WWE Divas Championship
Kaitlyn (c) vs. AJ Lee

—WWE Divas Champion Kaitlyn made her way to the ring first for this match, followed by a video recap of the events leading up to this match. Out next was AJ Lee with Big E Langston—to a nice ovation. As the bell rang, AJ Lee blew a kiss to Kaitlyn—which prompted Kaitlyn to strike AJ and then slam her to the mat. Kaitlyn’s strikes forced AJ to retreat to ringside, which saw AJ sent flying over the Spanish announce table as Kaitlyn threw her. Kaitlyn then threw AJ back into the ring to continue her assault and AJ would yet again retreat to ringside. There, AJ hit Kaitlyn to the face and proceeded to jump on the apron. Kaitlyn then ran into a kick from AJ. This was the opening by AJ that gained her control of the match. After a few minutes of control by AJ Lee, Kaitlyn was able to get back on offense after a drop-kick to AJ. During this AJ attempted a crucifix pin; however Kaitlyn countered it into her Fireman’s carry gutbuster. As AJ attempted to retreat to ringside, Kaitlyn grabbed her and her belt came of. Moments later AJ used the belt as a weapon; however, Kaitlyn was able to kick out. Following this, AJ Lee climbed the top ropes to hit a cross-body, in which Kaitlyn instead caught her. Kaitlyn attempted a move, in which AJ was able to counter it into the Black Widow. Kaitlyn did not tap-out, and was able to power out of the submission with a back-breaker, followed by hitting her spear on AJ.

Instead of pinning AJ, Kaitlyn crawled over her and blew a kiss. When she eventually covered, AJ kicked out. In the moments that followed AJ was able to apply the Black Widow once again, in which Kaitlyn tapped out…

Winner: AJ Lee

kaitlyn wwe payback 2013After the match, there was a big “you tapped out” chant directed towards Kaitlyn. The camera stayed on her as she was in tears on the ramp. Layla then came out to the arena to comfort Kaitlyn to a simultaneous “awww” from the fans, followed by a few booos (Hilarious!).

After a video recap of the match, we saw Kaitlyn and Layla backstage, as Natalya and Alicia Fox joined the pity party for Kaitlyn. Their comforting did not help, and she stormed off.

Thoughts: Congratulations to AJ Lee on becoming WWE Divas Champion, ending Kaitlyn’s reign at 154 days. This was a big night for both Kaitlyn and AJ Lee, who put on a great match which went over really well with the fans. World Wrestling Entertainment gave these ladies pretty decent time, and they delivered. Hopefully the feud continues, and they are given another Pay-Per-View match.

That match was amazing! So great to see what the women can do when given the time and space for creativity.

I hope we see a new Trish v Lita with this feud. This match was very good. The booing when Layla appeared was funny as hell lol Alicia looked great, btw; whoever is doing her hair now needs an award.

    So anticipating tonight!

That’s gotta be one of the longest Diva matches in recent history. Was nearly ten minutes I think? Vocal crowd, great spots, solid action, excellent acting and storytelling from both women. I think we have a MOTY candidate to go along with Gail/Taryn and Paige/Summer. I knew Kaitlyn was capable of this but AJ!? Her wrestling really decreased in quality last year but she’s finally back on track. I know we’ll see her have great matches with the likes of Natalya, Layla, Alicia and hopefully even Paige. Best match in the division since Eve/Beth at Vengeance 2011
