TNA Knockouts – January 17 & 24 iMpact Recap: Velvet is the Real Number 1 Contender, But Tara Remains the Champ!
Posted on Friday, January 25th, 2013

On the January 17 edition of iMpact Velvet Sky faced off against Gail Kim to see who was the true #1 Contender, and on the January 24 episode Tara defended her TNA Knockouts Championship.

First off let me apologize for the fact that I somehow skipped a week! I swore I covered the Gail Kim/Velvet Sky match last week, but apparently I didn’t. I shall tray my hardest for this to not happen again!

January 17, 2013

- Backstage we find Gail Kim confronting Knockouts Ref Taryn Terrell. Gail shows Terrell a video of the Genesis Gauntlet match and demands a rematch stating that Taryn better pay closer attention this time. Terrell apologizes  and agrees to call it down the middle. To which Gail exclaims “It better be called down the middle” and walks out.

TNA Knockouts – January 17, 2013 #1 Contenders Match
Gail Kim vs. Velvet Sky

- Gail Kim is out first followed by Velvet Sky. Gail easily dominates the former Beautiful Person for a majority

of the match with some stiff clubs and a couple big clotheslines and an awkward neckbreaker. In the end though Gail hits the Eat Defeat, but Velvet breaks thepin and has her legs under the ropes and this time Taryn catches it and stops the count. velvet recovers as Gail argues with the ref and hits some clotheslines of her own, before a crisp headscissors and a nifty little hamerlocke facebuster before hitting her In Yo’ face and pinning Kim and rightfully claiming the #1 Contendership.

Winner: Velvet Sky

Also on the January 17 episode was the wedding of Brooke Hogan and Bully Ray. Predictiblly it doesn’t end well as Taz is revealed to be the leader of aces and eights. Watch below.

January 24, 2013

- We again venture backstage to find Jesse Godderz and Knockouts Champion Tara getting psyched and jesse shows tara his toy of sky and claims “she likes dead pigeons or something” (As I burst into a fit of laughter) he then builds Tara up and asks her if she’s ready to which she grabs him by the vest and leads him out to the ring.

TNA Knockouts – January 24, 2013 Knockouts Title iMpact Match
Velvet Sky vs Tara (W/ Jesse Godderz)

- Velvet sky comes out followed by the champion. Velvet tries to pin Tara early and controls her with a clothesline and some arm drags and controls the KO champion. Velvet ends up one step ahead of Tar and kicks the vicious vixen out of the ring as we head to commercial break!

ANNNNND we’re back to find Sky is still controlling the champ. Tara tries to attack Velvet in the corner and gets an axe kick to the head, before getting taken down by a crossbody from the #1 Contender. Velvet keeps the pressure up with some chops and kicks before attempting a monkey flip out of the corner. Tara reverses it and drops Velvet on her back and gets a close two count. Tar controls the match with some suplexes and some chinlockes. Velvet tries to fight out but gets pulled down by her hair as Tara contunes to control the flow of the match now. Tara goes to the top rope, but Velvet recovers and throws the champ off the top. both ladies are down now as jesse is clearly pulling for his sweetheart. Both women recover as someone on the announcers team name drops the WWE and Velvet takes it to Tara with a headscissors takedown and that hammerlocke facebuster again. But Jesse distracts Taryn and Tara kicks out. Velvet slaps jesse off the apron and goes for another roll up, but Tara kicks out. Velvet goes for the suplex but jesse trips her, Tara puts her feet on the ropes and Jesse holds Velvet’s feet down as Taryn counts the 3 and Tara retains.

Winner: And still Knockouts Champion Tara

Thoughts: Hmmm. Well that was interesting. While neither matches were 5 star clinics like Gail, Brooke, Mickie & Tara have been putting on lately we shall blame that on ring rust. Velvet hasn’t had a whole lot of wrestling gigs since parting ways with TNA last year and six months off is quite awhile, especially if you’re not a 5 star wrestler to begin with. Overall there wasn’t anything bad about the matches, but there wasn’t anything big or exciting either. There wasn’t that big WOW moment that the last couple weeks have had. What did you guys think?

Definitely preferred this week’s match to last week. And of course it is Velvet in the ring with tara, and not Gail, Brooke, Mickie or Madison, so it was not as exciting. The match was good for what it was.

Jesse was has been great with Tara so far.

Wow, great effort from Velvet. That’s the best match I’ve seen her put on in ages. We’ve never really seen her and Tara work together since Velvet stepped up her game in 2011 and I like the results. The ending was annoying though since Tara’s legs were obviously hanging off the apron. It’s almost as bad as the time the ref waited for Gail to put her feet on the ropes before counting
