Women’s Wrestling Rundown #21: The Knockouts the biggest ratings draw in TNA, Awesome Kong officially gone!, Booker T and Sharmell on Media Take Out and more

In this edition of The Rundown: Awesome Kong’s release made official, Candice Michelle backstage on Smackdown, Stacy Kiebler, The Beautiful People, Mickie James and more.
—In breaking news…well, news that has been breaking for many weeks now, so-to-speak. Only today we have gotten closure with the story…. The roller coaster of Awesome Kong‘s status in TNA has come to an end. She is officially gone. Posted on her twitter on March 20, was this message… “I have asked for and received an early release from my contract. I would like to thank TNA for their support in this matter.” This week also marked Awesome Kong’s profile being removed from the Tnawrestling.com roster page. Numerous sites have reported that TNA’s intention was to have Kong sign an extensive no-compete clause, as opposed to 90-days. Pretty pathetic if it’s true. Two of the women that built the Knockouts Division did not get the pay they deserved; Gail Kim and Kong, that pretty much sets the tone loud and clear. A long no-compete clause would be for the sole reason of keeping her away from the WWE. And if you believe Kong wouldn’t get signed to the WWE because she does not of the “Diva” look, think again.
—On the March 8, 2010 edition of TNA Impact, the teams of Tara and Angelina Love, Velvet Sky and Madison Rayne, and Sarita and Taylor Wilde competed for the vacated TNA Knockout Tag Team Championship. Titles that were held by Awesome Kong and Hamada. Velvet Sky and Madison Rayne went on to be the 3rd title holders in the championship’s history. A very bitter-sweet story, as Awesome Kong and Hamada would have gone down in history of one of the best Women’s tag teams. On a happier note, Madison Rayne became the first woman to hold both the TNA Knockout Tag Team Championship and the Shimmer Tag Team Championship. Velvet Sky on the other hand—like her in-ring work or not—has worked hard for the company since 2007, so congratulations to her. Among the titles Velvet Sky has held in the past is the WEW World Heavyweight Championship, WEW World Tag Team Championship with April Hunter, and the WXW Women’s Championship.
—Despite the decline in airtime for the Knockouts since the Hogan-era, the TNA Knockouts have continued to be the most viewed segments on Impact. On the March 8, 2010 episode, the 3-way Tag team match to crown new TNA Knockout Tag Team Championships drew the highest rating, and Angelina Love vs. Daffney did on the Match 15, 2010 episode of Impact. With the loss of Kong, let us hope that Tara, Angelina, Daffney and the rest of the Knockout step up their game. The entire situation is a shame though. For two years, the Knockouts had multiple matches on each episode of Impact, and pay-per-views, now TNA has become a place for has-beens.
—Since Kong’s absence from television, Tara has been feuding against Daffney, and Angelina Love against The Beautiful People. Lethalwow.com recently caught up with Angelina Love at WSU’s anniversary show, where she talked about her return to TNA.
