This year at the Royal Rumble, Mickie James defeated Michelle McCool to become a 5-time WWE Women’s champion. Beth Phoenix also made history on the show, becoming the second woman to compete in the royal rumble.
WWE Divas – 2010 Royal Rumble Match: WWE Women’s Championship Michelle McCool(c) vs. Mickie James
—Mickie and Michelle’s feud came to ahead at the Royal Rumble, with Mickie James getting revenge on Michelle for weeks of bullying. After taking out Michelle’s sidekick Layla, she made quick work McCool by hitting her DDT finisher for the win. After the match, the Raw and Smackdown babyface divas made their way to the ring with a cake, and smothered it all over Layla and Michelle.
Winner: Mickie James
—Beth Phoenix was a surprise entrant in this year’s Royal Rumble. She entered at number 6, and eliminated the The Great Khali. Shortly after, she was eliminated by CM Punk.
Storyline-wise? Decent (Looking at the only video package the divas actually had since 2007)
Match-wise?…………..What match? It was more of a "blink and you’ll miss it" moment. MickieDT, pinfall, new champion!
Congrats to Mickie in being a 5-time Women’s champion & congrats to Beth Phoenix to being a apart of the Royal Rumble this year, though she was eliminated by CM Punk.
Indeed, it is interesting that we see those promo videos so often for the Knockouts, but it’s like Christmas to see that with the Divas. The storyline, like it or not, was what all parties needed, Michelle, Layla and Mickie. From a writing perspective, the squash match was really the sweetest revenge on Michelle.
Well, Mickie winning was predictable since Michelle has had the title since June and this feud has gone long enough. I was disappointed that it was a squash match, but now I do agree from a story POV that it was probably the best way for Mickie to win.
But after last nite, I’m more interested in where Beth is headed.
