Smackdown! Results: Mickie James vs. Layla, Plus Beth Phoenix, Michelle McCool and Mae Young

—This week on Smackdown, Mickie James wrestled her first match since being drafted to the show. Mickie defeated Layla after hitting her with a roundhouse kick. This was short, but a nice showing from the two. Layla had the same consistency she has had in recent weeks, and Mickie looked better than she has in some time. This was certainly not as involved as the match Kelly Kelly and Gail Kim presented on WWE Superstars this week.
—Earlier in the night, Mickie James was featured in a backstage segment with Michelle McCool, Beth Phoenix, and Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame-er Mae Young. Like with last week’s segment, this was meant to set up Beth and Mickie James as threats to McCool’s title reign.
The mic work here was lovely… a good change from the Maria-Dolph Ziggler related segments in recent weeks. Michelle McCool continued to establish herself as a talker, a department that has been her weakness for many years. Mickie and Beth on the other hand, got to show their promo skills which has been underused.
