—According to the cover of Pro Wrestling Illustrated’s Magazine for next month, Mickie James Ranked #1 in Pro Wrestling Illustrated’s Top 50 Women’s Wrestlers for 2009. Awesome Kong was ranked #1 in 2008.
Reaction: Awesome Kong being #1 in 2008 was on the money, however Mickie #1 in 2009, not-so-much. Let us leave TNA and Shimmer out of the equation, and analyze the last year purely based on the WWE—Mickie would not be ranked #1. Michelle McCool and Melina Perez certainly surpassed anything Mickie James has accomplished in the last year. In PWI fashion, even basing this on title reigns and push, Mickie would be outranked by McCool and Melina .
—The Raw Divas were featured on WWE Superstars once again this week. Beth Phoenix and Kelly Kelly went one-on-one, in which was a more acceptable match between these two, as opposed to what we have seen in the past. Beth Phoenix won the match after hitting Kelly Kelly with her Glam Slam.
Star Of The Match: Beth Phoenix, for carrying the match and being he awesome self. I will give Kelly Kelly credit for training hard to get to the point she is at. However, simple things like her horrendous forearms, annoying sound effects and repeated spots for each match, makes it hard to get behind her.
Yeah,I quite like Mickie for what she has done in the past, but I must admit to being let down some by her feud with Maryse.Granted, that’s hardly all Mickie’s fault. But neither it,nor things like her recent Raw match with Gail, speak top year in the biz.
Melina & Michelle should have been ahead of her this year.As should Kong and Angelina Love. And maybe someone else that I’m not thinking of or haven’t seen enough of.
Night of Champions (2009) for instance, comparing Mickie vs. Maryse, and Melina vs. McCool is night and day.
Angelina Love to me, is in the same boat as Mickie, great wrestler, and a fan of their past work…however lately, their wrestling leaves too much to be desired.
Don’t know that I’d place Love & James currently in the same category. The former was likely the MVP of the Knockouts division for the first half of 09 and was responsible for some of the top mic work a female has done recently. She did an entertaining job in progressing her presence as an all arounder, personality, and feud driver. She should move up significantly from 16th imo.The latter is still a quality performer in her own right but has had kind of an off year for her.Her persona and work have gotten kind of stale and are overdue for either a turn or some kind of new angle.
I can see what you are saying about Night of Champions and I don’t disagree about it’s substance. For what it’s worth,Maryse is greener in the ring than either Melina or McCool. So Mickie had to carry a larger share of the burden. But even so,Mickie at times seems somewhat more,um,distracted in the ring in general.Perhaps Raw’s particulary questionable booking of it’s women(among other unrelated roster parts)may be taking a toll on her passion or something.Though hopefully,it’s just a blip on her radar.
